its all realative to what the outcome is. If the lawyers keep him out of jail or gets it dropped then its worth it.

I would want to know possible outcomes before paying it. A year or 2 in prison, get a trade, might be worth it.

No

It's relative to market forces

The question is if lawyers in the community who charge less are likely to get the same outcome

If 80% can do it for $5k, then it's likely very excessive

It's probably a bit high, not insane if the lawyer has a good reputation. Call some other attorneys and meet with them and see what they would charge. From what I tend to see is $7,500 to $10,000 per felony if common place.

Representing 2 felonies that could go all the way to trial.

That's not a bad fee.

Married to a defense lawyer. I would suggest making sure he's fixed before paying for attorneys, cause he'll be right back in jail

Honestly, I get this mindset. And on the internet, that’s an incredibly easy statement to make.

But if it’s your child, would that be the same reaction? I’m thinking and hoping not
How likely is it that the private atty will get a better outcome vs the indigent defender? How many hours will the private atty spend on the kid's case, generally speaking? Isn't it most likely he's going to get probation and community service regardless? I'm honestly asking.

Unlawfully obtaining Adderal is seriously a felony in Texas? Not that I feel sorry for him with the burglary charge.

Probs a flat fee

That's actually a reasonable flat fee given the severity of the crimes

If it's a retainer you should find out the billable rate

Do you have a draft engagement agreement?

Offer to represent him yourself, plea him out, save 25k.

He should be doing some major positive life choices (job, volunteering, school ) in the next 9 months. Also he could go the blame it on addiction route and start going to AA or NA. Judges wanna see repentance in the form of improving yourself. If not for him then it will look good on paper ie court

This is gonna be worth more than a defense attorney when he's before a judge.

Get a public defender if he is guilty. Let them plea is down as far as they can and see how it feels. If you don't like it, you can always go get a lawyer.

Sounds like dumbass needs some county jail time TBH. His next charge after everyone throws money away bailing his arse out is going to cost a lot more than the $25K retainer.

Do lawyers charge "reasonable" fees? I think they charge what they charge and if the person paying the bill thinks it's reasonable they pay, if they don't think it's reasonable they move on. In my experience there is nothing reasonable about it...its damned expensive but if you stay out of jail, manage to not pay a huge fine or judgement or you're awarded more than the fees its just a necessary expense. It ain't going to be cheap or reasonable at all...

Based on the limited info presented I would be inclined to let the public defender handle it. Sounds like spending money on a real lawyer for this kid may be throwing good money after bad.

This sounds like good advice. As others have said the end result is probably going to be a plea. Facing some consequences isn’t necessarily a bad thing and may work as a wake up call.

17 and two minor felonies. He's probably looking at house arrest probation.
Since it's his first adult charge he may get a plea deal up front.
I doubt he gets hard time.
I would save the money. But hurry up and came ADD and get a script for the pills. Shouldn't be hard to find a doctor to write that.
Then when he goes to court he can say he's prescribed that drug.

The BnE depends on the jurisdiction. Some counties in z Texas look to throw the book.

Most likely going to be plea bargained anyhow...hiring an attorney to defend you works on TV because its interesting....in real life its a bunch of letters back and forth, a helluva bill and at the end of the day what was going to happen usually happens anyway.

Solid advice. Next time you find yourself getting heated on this message board (tomorrow at the latest) take your own advice!

Can you point in this case where it’s merited to the point where a parent should say “frick it, put him through the system so he learns”?

Let's see, he is charged with breaking into a dwelling to commit a crime (burglary) and he had possesison of an illegal drug. Maybe you think that's ordinary or even laudable conduct?

According to the OP he had one adderall in his car. Wow. Throw him to the wolves!

Edit: I don’t advocate for this kid to be let off with no punishment. But “frick it give him a public defender” seems a bit harsh.
