I pull the Seinfeld treatment and tell them just "to wait a little longer", and I will be free. I check back every five minutes or so until they hang up.

Tell them to hold on while I get the home owner and leave them there until they hang up.

They buy numbers of supposedly interested people.
The really cheap scammers just dial any number for free.

I ask them to stop talking then tell them to put me on the do not call list.
I also registered my number on the do not call website and very rarely get those calls.

First call I will politely listen and then ask to be put on the do not call list. If they proceed to call again I generally answer… Ask them to hold on a minute… Set the phone down… And go about my day.

I don't answer....especially if its a long distance number. If its a legit call they will leave a message. If not I add the number to my Call Blocker app. I have about 500 numbers in there.

I get a lot of sales people call. Y office line. It's torture to listen to some sales person extol the virtues of their company when I know I'm not buying.
They are super persistent. I can't imagine working in that field. Sounds terrible.

Immediate hang up. Then I block the caller. Of course, they just go to another number. It's a daily call from some perky-voiced young thing from "Card Services" about my credit card. They never identify which credit card, just "your credit card" and I'm sure all they want is to be helpful... like that's all they want. Not.

Thanks to robo dialing I just wait for the tale tale click over let them get about two words out and hang up. Then that number gets blocked.

I pretend to be interested and jerk them around. I use fake names, nonexistent addresses, pretend to have a foreign accent. Usually waste 10-15 minutes of their time.
Not wasting my time because it's a source of amusement for me.
This of course is for obvious scammers. Legit calls I would politely decline.

they don't call my personal line, but they have my business line. Lately I have been getting daily funding calls. Or to switch credit card merchants. It drives me nuts because they call from 504 numbers every time. I always answer those. I may let far out of state calls go to voicemail, but every missed call costs me $$ so I usually answer. Though I can easily block calls and I do that.
I used to be irate and mean, but those people are just doing a job.

state that you are interested in whatever they are promoting but first,
ask for their name, state they are calling from, and direct number in case we get disconnected,
then hit them politely with,
"ok, now listen carefully to my order so you get it correct,
i'm going to turn your name, company and associated numbers to the attorney general of your fair state for prosecution for unwarranted solicitation OR you can take me off your call list"
usually get an immediate click and no more call backs...
