How do you deal with a friend going through a manic episode?

A pretty good buddy of mine fled to England a few weeks ago to be with his girlfriend. Since he has been there, she has been hospitalized for ketoacidosis (she is a diabetic), and that coupled with the quarantine has made my friend quite...unstable. He will call me with these most outlandish ideas and delusions of grandeur. Whenever I even lightly suggest that he's being a bit off, he goes in to cognitive dissonance and resists completely.

Given that he is in a foreign country, I don't really know what to do, other than listen to him rant and rave and wait for him to come back down. He has been a bit off before, but this is an entirely new level (being introduced to secret societies, understanding new forms of energy, rejecting the need for clothes or sleep, just all kinds of crazy shite)

What would y'all do?

Sounds like you diagnosed him already. Have you prescribed any medication?

I'm obviously not a psychiatrist, so maybe I'm not entirely right. Regardless, something is off and I'm tired of listening to crazy shite every other day. I love the guy, but this is exhausting.

Tell him to sign up and post here so we can witness greatness during these odd times.

He tried to tell his girlfriend that she didn't actually need to go to the hospital and it was all in her head. What the actual frick. She almost died.

Whats up Hemp. Yeah thats an unusual situation, but what can you do other than let him talk.. Everyone has a nutty friend or two though. Those are usually the most loyal ones.

I guess you're right. Not much else to do, really. Was just curious if anyone with more experience with someone of that bent had any insight.

Reckon I've got to be the one to listen to the crazy for once.

He tried to get me to put 10k on Cuomo winning the Presidency the other night. Said it was ordained from the folks in charge. If he turns out to be right, I'm going to be pissed as hell. Granted, he did shoot up to +5000 out of nowhere (he wasn't even on the board before), so maybe the crazy man can know a thing or two.

Just remind him in a friendly way that he is going to regret it if he sounds like he is about to do something stupid. Is he working or just have too much free time on his hands? You probably have nothing to worry about.

If he is actually in a “manic state” and in another state....

You can’t help him. I would not answer his calls unless you are well rested and bored.

While I don't have a friend that is manic, I do have a dear family friend who's a functional alcoholic. Quite often he'll call me while he's one one of his benders.

That being said, there's nothing you can do but listen.

He needs to be PEC'd ( forced 3 days in a mental unit) and medicated. Been there done that with my brother. It's his only shot. Not sure how they do that in England though.

Probably through the County Coroner.

Every fecking local legal thing in the British Isles seems to go through the Coroner’s office.

Very difficult situation. I have a family member that is Bipolar and has extreme manic episodes when they are not taking their meds and it is a very helpless situation. The BS they talk is their real world and almost impossible to convince them it is not the truth. The only way is for them to get meds and shut down for a couple of days. My family member could go days without sleep.
