I answer but say I’m expecting another call and we can talk until then. Works for me.

There's a house fire. I have to go. AND I have to pee.

One day, the list of people wanting to talk to you is going to be virtually non existent. And you’ll probably realize how foolish you were.

Believe me, I understand this wisdom more than you know. I love meaningful discussion and good times, but listening to someone go from asking you a question about the break pads you put on your truck to rambling on for half an hour about their dogs bowel movement schedule ain’t it.

Does anybody have any good excuses to get off the phone asap?

“I have to go, talk to you later”?

Friends, family or otherwise, you don’t owe it to anyone to sit there while they word vomit into your ear and you certainly don’t owe them an excuse for not wanting to be a word-vomit receptacle. Just end the call and catch up later.

To sell it I'll sometimes put my phone in airplane mode for a bit

Try this: "I don't feel like talking."

My son calls me every night on his way home from work/school. He has about a 15 mins drive & we talk another hour or so. I love it though so I can't answer your question.

You could just hangup and put your phone on airplane mode for 15 minutes. Airplane mode is quite useful when you want to block out noise and distractions. Or to just disconnect. I'd leave that sucker on M-F 7:00a-5:00p if I could but that would be irresponsible, so I plan my own bi-monthly outages.

My guess is if you tell him honestly how you feel you probably won’t have to worry about them calling you anymore.

I have 3 people in my life that are capable of turning a 10 minute conversation into 45 minutes or longer. I can only say “uh huh” and “yeah” so many times. I guess it’s my personality, but after a day’s work, the last thing I want to do is chat for another hour unless it’s important or necessary.

I hate talking on the phone, and I spend a lot of my work day on the phone, so I am with you here.

My bf loves to chat on the phone, hes constantly driving for work and always calls me when hes bored in the car. I had to tell him recently that I simply cannot focus on the phone for these long conversations. There is too much going on around me to listen to 30+ minutes, I get distracted and lose track of whats going on in the story/conversation. You could try that trick, or during the day I just pretend I am about to jump on a Zoom call.
