Make civil commitment great again. Asylums had really serious problems 50 years ago. I can understand why many of them needed to go. But we’ve come a long way in understanding the science behind mental illness, and we clearly have no better alternative to institutionalizing dangerous people… shuttering them into a perpetual cycle of jail and freedom hasn’t done anyone any good.

Mentally ill? This was a political assassination brought on by decades of Marxist propaganda and indoctrination.
The left has been at war with this country for a long time. SOME on the right started to notice over the past decade and fight back.
After the 2020 steal, Trump assassination attempts, and now the murder of Charlie Kirk people have hopefully woken up.
Our leaders are feckless for the most part. Spineless cowards who say both sides when in fact it’s ONLY BEEN ONE SIDE.
The left has been at war with this country for a long time. SOME on the right started to notice over the past decade and fight back.
After the 2020 steal, Trump assassination attempts, and now the murder of Charlie Kirk people have hopefully woken up.

In NOLA my husband rented to a guy who admitted Schizophrenia. Nice guy until he didn't want to take his medicine any longer because he didn't like the way it made him feel.
Somehow Herb had gone to Chalmette and bought a hand gun, and was sitting on the roof waving the gun around. My husband called Herb's shrink, who talked him out of the gun, and the police came and took him away.
Herb always talked about how he hated the medicine..

The simple answer is--------You can't. You can't reason with a mentally ill person, and once they get something in their heads it usually just festers there until they crack and do something rash and sometimes very violent.
The trend I notice is when they go off and hurt or kill someone, the perps criminal record eventually comes out and there are numerous arrests for violent, and/or disturbing behavior and they are given a slap on the wrist and released back into the public. It's nothing but a revolving door.
There really isn't a definitive answer that will stop this type behavior since they arise out of different circumstances and can result in different levels of violence against innocent people.

The thing with meds for psychiatric conditions is it can take a good while to get the right meds and dosages right to actually help the people. It took over a year to help someone in my family and they are now doing quite well and functioning in society.
However, I know that if they stop taking their meds, it will only be a few days and things will start going south and they will be back to square one.
She knows she will be on these meds until she dies if she wants to maintain a normal life and be a functioning member of society.

Take away their access to weapons. Including automobiles.
Invest more in mental health services.
Invest more in education.
