You can’t

By institutionalizing them like we used to.

Properly operate psychiatric institutions.

First off, quit classifying evil people as "mentally ill". They're not. They are as sane as you and me. They're just despicable, mean people.

Bring back labor camps.

Constitutional carry EVERYWHERE will help in some of the cases. Obviously, it would not have mattered today.

The Kirk murderer is not “mentally ill.” This is cold, calculated murder.
I don't believe in insanity defenses... even schizophrenics don't jump in front of subways or walk in front of buses and pay attention to traffic signals, right? If someone displays thought for and concern for their own personal safety while selectively ignoring right and wrong and consequences of violence towards others, that sinks any insanity defense.

But what I'm saying is that killing someone is a mental illness, regardless of what the legal system defines it as. If your mind is that warped to where the sanctity of life no longer holds any value, you're mentally fricked. Mental illness is an increasing problem in this world, because it's more prevalent than people want to admit and hard to diagnose because there aren't always noticeable symptoms because everyone's inner thoughts are only ever truly known by that one person and no one else.
It’s not fricking mental illness. It’s EVIL. ptsd is a mental illness. Murderous intent is EVIL.

Bring back the mental asylums.
The prison system is currently the largest mental health provider in the USA and was never meant to be.
Some people should be taken out of normal society and put in a place where they can flourish.
It used to work before liberal judges dumped them on the street.

You just put them on an island and let them do their thing. Come back in 20 years and drop off the next lot

I for one would welcome bringing back public stoning and/or hanging.

My father worked at one when he was just out of high school.
Worked as a pharmacy technician.
Saw some crazy things.
However, there were some real positives. People had a purpose, a job to do, and had respect for doing a good job.
Then judges dumped them on the street and closed the place down.

Nationwide universal background checks, longer mandatory waiting periods, and denying access to weapons for people who have a history of mental illness, these would all help.

So where do we stop? Killing the perps? How about those cheering them on? How about the media and the politicians beating the hate drums. Your enemy could be family members or friends. Turning back to our Christian roots would be the answer.
