But honestly, how many people are living in an area where they don’t pass a grocery at least once a week?
Probably a good many west of the Mississippi.

We probably have 15 grocery stores within 5 miles of us and we don't go once a week. We usually just go buy 2-3 weeks of food at a time.

Search YouTube for the MySelfReliance channel. Dude in the Canadian wilderness built his own cabin, outdoor kitchen, etc. and shows how he hunts and gets most of his food from the wild. He does, however, make an occasional drive into the nearest town to the market.

I know someone who lives in rural Kentucky. The closes grocery store is about 15 mins away & the store has nothing more than the basics.. They live about an hr outside of Louisville and once a month they go there to do their “big shopping”.
They have 3 kids. Youngest is in middle school, oldest is a jr or sr in HS. Until the oldest got her licenses, they all rode the bus, which took them about 1.5 hrs to get to school. Now that she drives it takes about 40 mins. People do adapt.

Why not just make a list and buy a bunch of food at once? I like just walking into the kitchen and having a bunch of different options.

Depends on where you live. I know a guy who lived in downtown DC right above a Whole Foods. He’d walk into the store and buy fresh food to cook every night.
If I lived downtown in a large urban area, I could see stopping by the grocery almost every day.

I’m about 150 miles from the nearest town with a grocery store. There are also no roads so the only way to get there is about a $500 round trip flight. We do have a post office and have mail flow in a few times a week. I buy all my dry goods online through amazon, target, or Walmart. I use powdered milk, butter, etc. I make my own bread, ice cream, etc.
We do have the option to use instacart and have groceries sent to a private airstrip that will deliver for 0.93$ per pound the next time they are coming out. I do buy cheese, eggs, and occasionally soft drinks (bought a soda stream recently to cut these out) with instacart.
I should also mention we have great hunting and fishing where I am in AK so I don’t have to order meat often.
I’m in town for work every 3 months or so and I usually get supplies like ammunition, fishing lures, fruit, etc
We do have a garden and a greenhouse we share.
We can’t get a lot of the Amazon Pantry items the lower 48 get but I can get everything I need. It just takes a little longer to get here and cost a little more.

I lived in NYC for a year and we would buy food for 3-4 days at a time because we did not have much cabinet space. I still like to have some food in the house.

For instance, most houses have small refrigerators like you'd find in a dorm. So we started doing it that way out of necessity but we ended up preferring to do it that way by the time we left.

Its biggest advantage to me is that we get exactly what we're in the mood for every day. We've made lists in the past, and sometimes you're just not in the mood for what you thought you would be, a week before, when you made the meal plan. Also less reliance on canned and processed foods because we just get fresh stuff every day.

I used to live in West Texas, in a decent size city with a Sam's. I would see ranchers there with big 'offshore' ice chests, loading down with groceries. With temps of 100 degrees, they would have to protect their groceries for the long ride. Those kind of people may live 2-3 hours from the big city. Part of that makes it sound very attractive to me, but yeah... you really gotta plan.

Go once a week. I would take that every time over having to go multiple times for things you need or forgot to get

What do you do for work?

I am sure in places like New York, if you don’t drive yourself on a regular basis, you can only go buy what you can carry.

Plan ahead.
Buy in bulk and, once you're home, repackage into meal sized servings.
Amazon prime grocery delivery.
Either Walmart, Target, etc. place order via internet for pick up the next day. Saves huge amount of time.
Fresh garden produce from your back yard. Hunting, fishing, and preserving food.
Avoid pre-processed food whenever possible.
