The stretchy pants/relaxed look in the legal workplace seems to way more common... while men can't enter most courtrooms without a coat and tie.

In my SO's office, the men can't even have facial hair. The women get away with anything. I can understand being more lenient on support staff that doesn't have to go to court, but the attorneys should know better. I see the same trend in my field, although it's not quite as conservative as law.

Hired a guy at my previous company for oilfield sales. It was basically the kind of job you can do from home or car. Visit customers, they don't come to us.

He was with us for 2 weeks and didn't seem to be picking up much about our products. We had an impromptu meeting one afternoon at the office and I called him to let him know he needed to come to our production facility for a meeting. We have 70 people at that location including admin and sales. He asked me if he could come in shorts. We were a $40 million dollar a year company.

I fired him 2 days later.

My boss told us, "Don't dress for the job you have, but for the job you want." Well, what I want is to get paid lounging around the house doing nothing, so that's how I dress.

The only thing that really irks me is when men don't know how to wear a suit. I see guys all the time walking around with a two button or three button suit and every button is buttoned.

you button one button. It's not hard.

There's one guy here who wear brown shoes and black belts. I don't get how you can leave your house like that.

There's nothing wrong with that.

Warren Buffet and Bill Gates dress like a couple dorks

A cursory image search results in mostly photos of both wearing suits.

Regardless, both have "frick you" money and probably aren't who the OP was referring to.

I forgot my belt one morning. I went and bought a new one as soon as the stores open instead of looking like a fool.

If CEOs of Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Tesla can conduct day-to-day business without formal wear then I think you can too.

Basic style knowledge is little more than what clothing companies and designers say is basic style at that point in time.
