About half the places I worked were like something out of "The Big Bang Theory" at one job we had a absolutely brilliant guy quit because the Health and safety people required him to wear some type of closed toe shoe instead of sandals in lab areas.

I know a guy who owns a large business with plants in 5 states and when you go see him he has on jeans, a white tee shirt and an old dusty promo cap. One guy that knows him well estimates his net worth to be $200 million plus. Read “the millionaire next door” and you will be surprised at how many people have money but are not pretentious about showing it off.

I haven't been able to find an actual study on this. I have found several articles where business owners either saw no drop in productivity or an increase in productivity after changing to casual, however.

At the end of the day, if a work environment that doesn't have face to face customer interaction forces you to dress up, it's not about productivity. It's to remind you that you're a bitch and they get to dictate everything up to how you dress. So tie that noose around your neck every morning, put on some slacks, and head out to work.

Some people just don't care or have no taste.

Typically, they are the engineers or they work in IT.
