How do drivers not know their headlights are off?

Seriously, I see this practically every night in Arlington, VA. It's in the middle of the night and some dumbfrick is zipping along without his lights on.

Granted the streets are pretty well-lit, but does nobody ever look down at his speedometer and wonder why it isn't lit up like a Christmas tree?

Especially if your car is dark to start with, someone is going to pull right in front of you because the driver didn't see you, fricktard.

It's a gang initiation. Don't flash your lights!

Who’s still driving cars where you actually have to turn them on?

Yeah, whole dash isn't lit, seems that something would appear off to you. I have no answer except "it could happen to anyone" and "dont look for trends in who does it", the world will demonize you for even asking.

Drives me nuts. Most times when I flash my brights at them they still don’t turn on their lights.

This happens to me when I'm in a rental that doesn't have automatic lights. Takes me a few minutes to realize it since I'm usually in an unfamiliar city and hyper focusing on road signs and my GPS.

This has happened to me more than I care to admit. I would bet that a significant % of cars on the road in Arlington are business travelers in rental cars.

I feel like this must not be taught in drivers ed anymore, doesn’t seem like anyone ever gets the hint for turning on their lights or turning off their brights

Newer cars allow you to adjust the brightness of the dash instruments. By default they are usually brighter for day time driving. This makes it confusing sometimes at night because everything is already lit up. Couple that with driving in an area with lots of street light and it makes it easy to not realize your headlights are off.

Who the hell doesn't have automatic headlights?

Every truck I've had since 2000 has had auto lights.

Nor does anyone flash brights to warn of police anymore.

In Louisiana it’s because they’re either drunk or their shitty clunker doesn’t have working headlights.
