They don't accept applicants with painful heel spurs.

I thought the US military changed that so that all active commissions are created equally now. No more reserve or regular commissions.

I researched the question briefly and I could find no indication that Service Academy grads now receive anything other than a Regular commission.

Like the seventh grade.

You need to be have excellent GPA, test scores, letter on 3 different varsity school teams, and being a pillar of the community by organizing a cook out to feed the poor.

There is a reason so many go the ROTC route in a local college.

Getting into those service academies is the military equivalent of getting into Harvard medical school.

this was a change that was part of DOPMA, which also did away with permanent and temporary grades

I don’t remember Bo. It looks like he graduated two years behind me. I left the team to concentrate on my academics after my sophomore season. Looks like Bo joined the team as I left the team.

Based on his LinkedIn profile we have several mutual friends obviously most of them were teammates.

If they don't get in 1st try and are committed to making it, send them to Northwestern Preparatory School held here in Crestline, CA. This photo is from this last weeks USAFA graduation. NWPS has about a 95% success rate for getting grads into one of the Academies. They go for one semester and I think it's $10k. Money well spent if your kid has their heart set on it.

Absolute must these days. I went through this drama with one of my sons. If I knew then, we would have started the process much earlier.

Heard of bad sports parents? You haven't seen anything until you meet the bad scholarship parent. Our process involved USAF/USN ROTC scholarships, I can't imagine how bad the Academy process is.

Valedictorian
Lots of volunteer and clubs
Sports not necessary
95% in standardized tests
Jrotc my help
Congressional endorsement
Prior service connections
Prior enlisted can apply if they meet age requirements

Many freshman cadets I met had no common sense. Their training is primarily through the senior cadets with guidance from tac nco’s and co’s. West Point is brass and senior nco heavy, formality is necessary but all of the co’s and nco’s treated me with respect and shot the shite with me numerous times.

I was a junior nco medic in charge of 7 medics so we were the first line of medical support for over 1,000 cadets during their freshman basic training

There’s also a preparatory academy on the West Point campus as well for cadets that didn’t get in

Your right, but it helps if they played a varsity sport. They are going to have to pass the physical to get in and pass a physical every year (some kids are on physical probation their entire careers at USAFA and make it). My youngest flunked the physical (he played offensive line in HS) and we sent him to Northwestern Preparatory School and he went from 270 lbs. to 230 lbs. and from 1 pull up to 10 pull ups. He called USAFA after being rejected and asked if he could go to the Preparatory School? He was told no, his grades were to good to be offered a Preparatory School spot at USAFA! So we paid for him to go to NWPS here in Crestline, CA where they get you in academic (which he didn't need), mental, and physical shape.

People considering coast guard should understand that their officers served in Persian gulf war rotations and they go out to do rescue in hair raising conditions.

The absolute bottom line is that you are competing against your local competition.

I am a naval aviator with a BA from LSU who attended AOCS back in the day.

Coming from a LISA school in 84 I would have been a shoe in. Varsity athlete, Class Pres, Student Council, National Merit, yada, yada, yada.

My son was interested and eminently qualified. Much better prepared to apply than I ever was. Unfortunately in our Texas 6A school district/Congressional district he was not competitive. Want to get in? Be a smart minority female from a rural district with no competition. There are no guarantees. Your genius Eagle Scout, Class president, varsity athlete, missionary kid may not be selected if there is a kid in your area who has one more "qual", even though little Timmy is better qualified than 98% of the other kids applying his/her year.

If he/she gets in, great. I have friends who made O-7 from an Academy. Some of them are good dudes/dudettes! :-) I have friends who made O-7 from ROTC/OCS. All of them are good dudes/dudettes! ;-)

If you/your kid aspires to an Academy, they need to start thinking about it in Jr High. That's when you have to start down the Eagle Scout/Varsity Athlete/Extracurricular Leadership trail. That said, if you are from the sticks and your kid is a superstar, you can wait until your Senior year and you may get the bid.

Good luck!!

My nephew scored a 31 on the ACT as a 9th grader and will be a starter on the football team next year as a sophomore. He's from a small rural school. The last Academy appointment from there was in the eighties. I'm guessing he has a fighting chance if he wants it, especially if improves his ACT a few more points and grows enough to be a football prospect.

My mistake, it was posted on the USAFA parents resource page after graduation. I should have looked closer at the uniform. They are blue with the gold sash. NWPS sends nominees to Army, Navy, AF and Coast Guard Academies. The kids decide where they want to apply. Here's a shot with DOD Secretary Mattis the keynote speaker at graduation.

Only for candidates who didn't have the academic requirements but would have otherwise been accepted

Every person at the service academy must have a qualified appointment. The service academies do have methods of getting nominations not through Congress
