I honestly believe that it is part of the screening process to see who is willing to fight for their spot. I was originally medically disqualified for history of allergies and asthma. We fought the ruling and eventually received a waiver. I originally thought that I received the waiver because I was a recruited athlete, but later realized several of my classmates had to receive a waiver as well.

Yes, Ronnie was a year behind me. I was a center and he was QB so you could say we knew each other well.

TBH, I'm not. That's what someone who was in at the time told me. They seemed sure of it, but who knows. I'm sure it's online somewhere but I'm too lazy to look it up.

So am I. But I just saw a post on Quora where some guy says that the service academy grads receive a Regular commission.

By the way, some jackass downvoted your post. I have no idea why. I upvoted you.

If you intend to be career military an academy degree at Annapolis or West Point will get you a regular commission in Army or Marines, but rotc is a reserve commission

Not 100% true. You are correct all Academy grads get regular commissions. ROTC ALSO gets SOME. ROTC cadets are selected for RA or Reserve competitively based on the remaining Congress allocated RA slots remaining for any given year group. I went to LSU on a full ROTC scholarship and got an RA commission upon graduation.

As did I (A&M, not LSU). There's still a distinction between RA (active duty date starts when you report to OBC/BOLC) and Immediate Active (active duty starts the day you commission...until your date of rank is moved to the day after West Point graduates)

It is quite tough to get an RA commission coming out of ROTC or OCS. Service academy grads, it seems certain, are commissioned as Regulars, not Other Than Regular.

McCain's grandfather was also a US Navy Admiral.

Folks, the fact that this John McCain senator failed to make Admiral like his paw and Grandpaw should tell us something about this man, IMHO. I mean, he had a golden path laid out for him to make Admiral. IMHO, the Navy considered his military service to be as admirable and heroic as any Naval Aviation Officer, but, lacking in that special outstanding nature that would make him a good Admiral.

Just my 2 cents. I mean, I didn't make Admiral, either.

The step by step process is outlined on each academies web site, typically the 10th grade is not too early to start working on it, and I am totally serious.

I thought the US military changed that so that all active commissions are created equally now. No more reserve or regular commissions.

You don't get a lot of chances in the academies to be dumb, and something like a drunk in public can ruin your military career at 18 instead of being a dumb mistake for a 18 year old.

Or it’s possible that some 18 yo don’t need to get drunk or make those mistakes. I did. Repeatedly. But that doesn’t mean it’s a required right of passage.

It is not a vague connection, being a graduate of a four year maritime academy is one of the many requirements to become a river pilot.

Several years ago a WP cadet got into a scuffle in an airport with the bodyguard of some celebrity. The other guy was determined to be completely in the wrong, but the cadet was found to have consumed alcohol. Not drunk, but had a beer or two. Result, expulsion.

I’m not suggesting there isn’t a short leash but the point is that the types of people attracted to The academies and the types admitted understand and respect boundaries more so than most. I mean under age drinking is illegal. It may be commonly abused but it’s still illegal.
