Just be prepared for your son to major in beer and chicks his first two years until he realizes he needs two more years of loans because TOPS only goes 4 years.

Don't listen to these guys. People who weren't in fraternities like to destroy any thread that mentions them.
Modern pledging is like 6 weeks. I pledged for an entire semester and 12 weeks into the next semester. He'll be fine and will be proud of his choice for his entire life.

His difficulty will be finding a fraternity that wants to accept a sophomore pledge.
I know several guys who were engineers and pledged and did fine. It's a ton of work and takes discipline, but that's the case with pretty much anything.

Yeah he's a good kid. He really seems to buy into the whole frat thing though. I actually tried to talk him out of it, but he really wants to do it.

I never had a problem studying and rushing. If he really wants to do it, he should be able to manage.

There are plenty of "good kids" who are members of fraternities. You may need to trust him to choose the place where he fits in. If he is a good kid, he'll go to a fraternity with other guys who are trying to make something of themselves and aren't out to recreate Animal House.

Not to question your parenting, but being in a fraternity is far from a bad thing. I would encourage most people to do it and to actually get involved with it. You can actually accomplish things while in college as a fraternity member and you can, if nothing else, use it to build a resume. Believe it or not, a lot of people look at a guy who was in a fraternity and think, "Okay, at least he's not socially inept."

I say let him try it out, I doubt he will regret it, and you can meet some very valuable contacts during your years in the fraternity. Not that you can't if you don't join, but it's not too shabby keeping those contacts of guys who come from families with the money to spend on fraternity dues. They definitely are beneficial.

CE grad here.
Sophomore year is the toughest year IMO. PHYSICS and STATICS are the indicator classes. If he gets through those then he'll make it.
And college students will have distractions regardless. Rushing sophomore year would have been 2x more difficult time wise for me considering the school work load. Hopefully his year of college and the resulting maturity will help him out.
*not a frat guy but I had a gf in a sorority and had plenty of friends in my classes that were in frats

I'm a civil engineer and I pledged while in college. It's honestly not that hard, all he needs to do is be organized and not wait to do homework at the last minute. I was an engineering major, pledged, and had a job and i made it through. The frat was a nice way on the weekend to get rid of alot of stress and party with friends. People will give frats a bad rap but all my groomsmen in my upcoming wedding are guys from my fraternity.
ETA: I would highly recommend him joining a fraternity. I interviewed for my job and it was between me and someone else and the guy that interviewed me picked me because I was in the same frat as he was when he was in college.

It was bad. I won't lie about that. I actually had a really good GPA in my core engineering classes after that. I just didn't put much effort into it because I was to busy sleeping in . I had tons of pledge brothers with 4.0's. You just have to go into it with the realization that studying comes first. You still have plenty of time for fun. I probably went out more my last few years at LSU, but I knew how to handle my business before going get drunk.

Two of my fraternity brothers were computer engineering majors, both were the hardest partiers I've ever met, & both somehow managed to make good grades. It can be done, but your son better be ready to go days without sleep.
