I actually find people rather pleasant when out in public. The vast majority are polite and courteous.

Blaring music at the gas station, no thank you for holding open doors, talking loud on the phone in line, littering, cursing in polite conversation, no please and thank you, ma’am and sir, etc.

Seems like half the population are just angry, bitter and just don’t give a shite anymore.

What happened?

Is this all anecdotal or can you provide any direct evidence that this is occurring more so than it has in the past? All of you boomers love saying shite like this with nothing to back it up other than your own personal observations. I am pretty sure every generation in this history of people has said this about the younger generation.

We went to Myrtle Beach last summer and this was the first thing I noticed in northern GA and pretty much all of SC. I opened the door for an older gentleman in Charleston and he was so thankful he stopped and told me how nobody does it anymore. It was funny because I was just bitching about it to my wife before I went in the gas station. When I returned she was like what was that old guy saying to you.

I don't even know how to describe it, but I'm sure all of you know what I'm talking about.

It's Karen.

Boomers were saying this when we were blaring Van Halen and Def Leppard back in the day. It's a natural progression for you to complain about the youth's choice in music as you get older. Nostalgia gets the best of you.

Once again, blame the boomers.

They decided to only care about themselves. All about taking care of #1 and maximizing their self-worth. they were nice enough to each other, but they were cutthroat and would do anything necessary to step on someone's neck on the way to the top. No sense of community, no sense of helping others.

Kids see this. Kids see that if you don't maximize for yourself, you are gonna be screwed. So they increase the not caring about others - with the exception of their kids. Oh, they care about their kids - doing everything they can to "better their life" including travel ball, segregating in schools, etc.

So these kids have spoiled their entire life and have no idea how to associate with people who are "different" than them.

They have kids - our current millenials - who have been told their entire lives that they are special and self-important, and because their parents have no diversity of thought or diversity of friends, they don't have it either. Further they spend time on these screens, and never develop any in-person social skills.

So, they have no idea how to talk to each other in real life, and have no idea how to deal with people who are different than them, and have no idea what it's like to care about someone else other than themselves.

Add to that the boomers ranting on talk radio, MSNBC, Fox News, PT talk, and the kids see that and they emulate that.

And that's how we got here. Very slowly, and then all at once.

Around here, if you hold the door for a black woman, 99% they just eat that shite up. Smiles, thank you's, etc. No one in this world has less game than I do, but I always get a big smile, thank you, or comment of some kind back.

I was in a doctor’s waiting room this afternoon with around eight other people. A guy who appeared to be in his late 30’s comes in with what I assume was his wife. They sit down, and he immediately pulls up some podcast or something on his phone and is listening to it at a volume that everyone in the waiting room can hear. I mean, he was sitting right across from a television in the lobby that was on, but on mute.

My wife (no pics) chaperoned a school trip a few weeks ago. She shared a room with another female teacher, who is like 24 years old. When they got to the room, the other teacher pulls out her laptop, lays in bed, puts on Game of Thrones at full volume, and watches. No earphones. My wife was like WTF and ended up going to get food or something.

Gen X here, and if you read the entire thread, you’ll see that older people are taking their share of the heat.

When women stopped staying home and raising their own children. Now they are raised by people that don't give a shite about their mental or emotional development (day cares). They are babysat by TV that is full of violence and they have no one there to explain that it's bad. Once upon a time TV shows and parents taught morals and compassion. Now it's just screw them over them before they can do it to you.

And then there's the substance abuse problems of a lot of parents.
