I was in and out of Northern Ireland with my job in the 70's and 80's. The Catholics and the Protestants could tell who was what at a glance and from a distance. I have no idea how they could tell, but they could.

Wasn't at all comparing the suffering and torture aspect of the Holocaust, simply the way information is stored on citizens, getting neighbors to rat out gatherings, etc. It's just my opinion on how things get started that lead to far worse things down the road. Again, JMHO, which you certainly don't have to agree with.

it's pretty easy to spot a jew. They have hooked noses, curly hair, fricked up ears, eyes are close together and 90 percent wear glasses.

In most places in Germany and Eastern Europe, Jews tended to congregate like the Warsaw Ghetto and smaller communities in the countryside so it was relatively easy to nab them. In Western Europe not so much and as such the Germans had a harder time....Denmark for instance created a huge problem because the Germans mandated a star on all jews, the Danes did not like it so one day in protest everyone Jew and non Jewish wore a star.
At first it hung up the Nazis and then the Nazis said, OK. You're Jewish you can suffer the fate of Jews. Some went to camps and others were executed as terrorists for upsetting the Germans. After that Jews were easier to find. In France they got the Vichy to do the dirty work.

I believe the Dutch Government had a very detailed census/filing system which listed all sorts of data, including religion, race and information like that for your parents and grandparents, etc. The Nazis started using these files once they took over.

Mostly census and tax records. Sometimes if the Nazis thought you were really bad, you'd just be labeled Jewish regardless.

I think there were pretty harsh penalties for anyone who knew someone was Jewish and didn't turn them in. Maybe even death.

This is the correct answer. They turned everyone against them. The penalties for NOT turning them in was death to your family. People curried favor by exposing them. Once this game begins, it spreads like wildfire. Amazing how people do not learn these lessons. People that are now vocal in the USA have made themselves targets for haters in the future. Read your history. This has played out over and over again!
