He is a household name. I grew up in car rides with my parents listening to him. He had some of the most famous concerts in the US and globally of all time.
But opera is a pretty niche subject. I wonder what the ground level movements of his popularity was in the 70s and 80s in the US was to get to an event to like this

I know that screenshot is of the three tenors. I honestly couldn’t name any of the other tenors. My parents were at that concert and they only ever mentioned Pavarotti and how they as blue collar people got awesome tickets to sit in front of celebrities

His major breakthrough in the United States came on 17 February 1972, in a production of La fille du régiment at New York's Metropolitan Opera, in which he drove the crowd into a frenzy with his nine effortless high Cs in the signature aria. He achieved a record seventeen curtain calls.

I'm not familiar. Never heard of him.

That would explain why maybe the art scene in large cities like Ny would know him. Not really how he became a household name

Luciano Pavarotti, the renowned Italian tenor, became a household name in the United States through a combination of his extraordinary vocal talent, charismatic stage presence, and strategic media appearances. Here are key factors that contributed to his entry into mainstream culture in the US:
1. **Television Appearances**: Pavarotti made numerous appearances on popular television shows, including "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and "Saturday Night Live." These appearances introduced him to a broader American audience who might not have been familiar with opera.
2. **Live Performances and Tours**: Pavarotti performed in major concert halls and venues across the United States, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. His "Three Tenors" concerts, alongside Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, particularly the 1994 World Cup concert, were immensely popular and brought opera to a global audience.
3. **Recordings and Albums**: Pavarotti released numerous albums that were commercially successful. His recordings often included popular opera arias as well as crossover albums that featured more accessible, popular songs, appealing to a wider audience.
4. **Media Coverage and Interviews**: Pavarotti was frequently covered by the media, with interviews and features in major newspapers, magazines, and on television. His engaging personality and humble demeanor endeared him to many.
5. **Collaborations with Pop Artists**: Pavarotti collaborated with a number of popular music artists, such as U2, Elton John, and Celine Dion. These collaborations introduced him to the fans of these artists and showcased his versatility.
6. **Philanthropy and Public Events**: Pavarotti's involvement in charitable events, such as his "Pavarotti & Friends" concerts, which raised funds for various causes, also kept him in the public eye and endeared him to many for his humanitarian efforts.
These factors combined to make Luciano Pavarotti not only a celebrated figure in the world of opera but also a beloved and recognizable personality in mainstream American culture.

This thread has potential.
Who knows, some Andrea Bocelli may break out up in here once he plays at the RNC tonight.

And to put a juicy steak on top of a juicy steak- Aretha Franklin stepped in for him at the last minute with no preparation when he couldn't perform at the Grammy Awards and did this. Two huge talents that fulfilled this song's amazing potential. Puccini knew what the frick he was doing.

Overheard a funny story about him from two Brits in line for a BA flight from Logan to Heathrow. It had just been announced that the Concord was being grounded permanently. They said he wouldn’t be coming to the US anymore. He couldn’t fit into the bathroom on a plane, and the Concord was the only flight short enough for him to hold it in.
