Obviously they learned that Hezbollah was moving to this communication method. But then they had to:

1. Insert themselves into the manufacturing process so they could plant the explosives.

2. Control the sales and distribution process to ensure that the explosive pagers got sent to Hezbollah.

And all in a forgotten, obsolete product that few still use. An amazing feat really.

The real story is the comeback of pagers. Most publicity they’ve gotten in decades.

No and no. What we should really be thinking about is how they're able to software hack a device with a battery to explode. Promise you this is equally possible with cell phones.

probably knew that Hezbollah was ordering it from a specific vendor and interrupted it between the manufacturer/shipper and the vendor

I mean I agree it is amazing in is simplicity
and it probably wouldn't be that hard to pull off I'm sure that if the story were to be told and it probably won't be
that the shipment was delayed

The amazing thing is that they had all the people in place and probably pulled it off as quickly as they did by inserting of the explosive device

If true, then this is really scary. But to get the damage they inflicted there almost certainly had to be explosive added, right?

governments routinely capture shipments of devices to plant backdoors. This was found in cisco firewall and routers.

From my understanding, there were small explosive devices built into the pagers. It wasn’t a factory battery that exploded. I could be wrong.

Or alternately, pre-prepared an entire rigged shipment and replaced the intercepted shipment with the rigged one.

Today I learned pagers are still in use.

One article said these were "secure pagers." My guess is they were locally produced or modified and not simply commercially procured at least not in their final state. If so, would make sense if the Israelis inserted themselves in that manufacturing or distribution process. Otherwise, they'd have either had to plant explosives in thousands of non target pagers or one by one clandestinely plant them in each target's phone in the wild which also seems implausible.

They've been known to do this before w cell phones which would explain why Hezbollah would switch to pagers and attempt to control the distribution chain making then vulnerable en masse if exploited from within. I'd also not be surprised if the initial casualty #s are grossly inflated.

They pulled off Stuxnet by watching an Iranian video until they figured out who one of the scientists were, found his work computer online, waited till he plugged a USB drive into said laptop, then auto-uploaded a specific line of code that would dump into a control system as soon as he plugged said USB into a specific computer seen in the video. The code would speed up a variable frequency drive inside a centrifuge, while not alerting the control room that the machine sped up. This code would randomly select a new machine to destroy at a rate not too high to seem suspicious. It set Irans enrichment program back years.

They can figure out how to screw with anything if it connects to a network somehow.

You really think they got 1200 batteries to explode all at the same time with a software hack? Seriously?

I could tell you but ...... OK wait, I'll tell you how, but first hold this pager next to your head while I find my notes

The software companies have backdoors, but they are supposed to guard them like Coca-Cola does their recipe. The CIA and the Mossad supposedly got Microsoft and Semmens to allow them access to one such to plant the Stuxnet virus on Iran's centrifuges.

That would explain how they access the units, but not what exploded. Can't imagine that even if they had lithium batteries there would be enough material to produce more than a poof and fire on those, unless these "pagers" looked like something they used to call in artillery fire on Iwo Jima.

It is being reported now that Mossad actually placed explosives in each pager and was able to send a message that caused the batteries to overheat and detonate the explosive.

Do you think Hezbollah has a Procurement department? Maybe it’s unique to the entertainment industry, but I’ve never come across a procurement team in my line of work that doesn’t have a few members of the Jewish community in it.

Hell, maybe that’s how the leak happened.

Shabbat Shalom.
