Solid advice for men and women... whoever is wanting out should be the one to leave/move.

Or you could not marry a gold digging cum dumpster and live a rewarding life together.

I work with a lot of dudes who insist their wives stay at home and then bitch about her not bringing in any money. A lot of them are cheating as well.

Here’s hoping I’ll never have to be dependent on a man.

It’s a very outdated thing.

The fact that a divorce allows a woman to make money off her ex is complete BS.

I understand child support even though that needs an overhaul but alimony is something that shouldn’t exist

I don't think I've ever heard of 50 years of alimony. Have you?

First, it was mainly meant for the 40s and 50s little housewife situations where women couldn’t really work.

Having said that, I remember reading about a case, maybe 25 or 30 years ago. I believe it was a Louisiana case. Some guy had married some woman when they were both in their 20s. They had gotten a divorce in their early 30s. She had married two deadbeats over the next 20 or so years. By the time she was in her 50s, she had been divorced three times but was unable to get any alimony from either one of her two deadbeat husbands. She was pretty much destitute. Her first husband had done well (financially) in life. So, she sued her first husband (who hadn’t seen her in over 20 years) for alimony.

He thought it was a joke. But it wasn’t a joke. In the end, the judge actually ordered him to pay her alimony. The reasoning was that it was better to make him pay for her alimony rather than putting her on the public dole. I’m sure he appealed, but I have no idea what happened in the case at the end.

When I read it, I was shocked. And it didn’t happen like back in the 50s or 60s or even 70s. This was like the late 90s. But that’s how women were looked at up until the 2000s.

Did the wife agree to stay home and be a homemaker for the marriage so the husband could pursue his career?

Alimony is to compensate the wife and replace earnings so she does not become a ward of the state that depends on welfare / food stamps to survive.

Alimony is usually negotiated and not a default 50 years situation like you are stating.

This reads like an incel ragebait post against women lmao.

Well and at least here in Kentucky, once you move in with a new partner you automatically forfeit it. The fiance's ex moved in with someone when they separated so she didn't qualify for alimony in their divorce.

Then they’ll bitch about child support but refuse to actually do any raising of the kids. And they’ll shove the parenting on the cheating partner and always have to have a gf so they don’t have to be a father.

Idiots

Often when talking about finances and people are sort of prodding for advice I usually lead off with don’t get divorced.

I never have, but I’ve seen multiple people who lost equity and savings from the proceedings. Having to sell property prematurely, liquidating stocks, and having to split retirement savings are all huge financial setbacks.

The OT got me worked up about this, but the judge only gave me a year. Unfortunately for me that's probably not going to be enough deterrent to not marry some other crazy chick.

Alimony can be indefinite.

But if you were married for less than 10 years you are probably only paying half the length of your marriage.

Family court is also biased toward women. And we changed abuse to not just mean physical abuse. It allows women to just make shite up now.

That doesn’t sound legit. I know of at least two cases where the mom pays the dad child support in a 50/50 split because the mom makes more money.
