Was it uncommon to see really obese people before ~ the late 1980s?

Childhood obesity began to grow in the 80's, but was still around 10% near the end of the decade. The explosion of fat people has mostly occurred in the past 25 years.

People use to be rather petite. There was always a chunky kid or two growing up but not like now. Unbelievable number of wide bodies around.

Do processed foods have something to do with it?

The number of fastfood joints in BR has multiplied many times from since I was a kid in the 80-90's.

You talking about the 1880's? We got our shite from the grocery store in the 1980's.

Processed foods, low fat diets, less exercise (children have fewer exercise breaks at school - video games encourage children to stay indoors). Lord knows, there are a number of reasons for it.

Throughout human history poverty meant limited food.

Capitalism kicked poverty's arse so now we have plenty.

In elementary in the 70s we typically had one fat kid per grade. They were said to have a thyroid problem. We didn't have computers, I-Phones or video games. We played outside and ate healthy meals as a family.

The seats are small but not necessarily really narrow. I'm not morbidly obese by any means but I'm certainly a little overweight. I had no issue with he width of the seats at Fenway, seemed pretty normal TBH. However, my shins were bloody and bruised from beating into the seat I front of me and I'm only 6'0".

And coincided with the end of fat shaming. First time I ever saw the “fat is beautiful” bullshite was when Kamryn Mannheim was on “The Office”.

Ever since then the fat people are beautiful narrative has been pushed harder and harder. And the idea that you’re good just the way you are has been promulgated. But we all know that’s just not true. It’s an excuse.

With the increased use in processed foods, sedentary lifestyles, and Sedentary employment is a perfect storm for obesity. When I was a kid there was a “fat kid” or two in every class now that’s flipped to I would say at least 50%.

It’s also violent hate speech to fat shame these days too.

It all started with the construction of the “Food Pyramid”. It was developed by lobbyists from the sugar industry who paid off a Harvard researcher (in 1980) to blame health issues on Fat not sugar and carbs.

The rest is history.

But people trust the government and their scientists on COVID today.

Pale skin meant you didn't have to labor outside (hence "redneck" as a classist insult)

Pretty sure the term redneck was derived because they had to make their own soap and it hade a lot of lye in it that burnt/irritated the back of their necks. I could be wrong on that though.

Processed foods are not helping. Plus, when I was growing up, nobody came inside until the street lights came on.
