Was it uncommon to see really obese people before ~ the late 1980s? I've heard this before but thought it was improbable because when I look at what people before then ate and drank it was pretty damn unhealthy (fried chicken, white bread, canned foods, soft drinks, etc); however, I guess they did enough walking for a moderate caloric deficit

I was 15 years old in 1983. I only knew one person who had diabetes. And he had type 1 diabetes and was tall and skinny.

Today, I can easily name 30 people in my circle who have type 2 diabetes.

Never in human history have there been more fat slobs than now. There have always been fat people just not so many. When I went to Europe in 2004 the only fat people I saw were American tourists.

I remember growing up we'd have maybe 1 or 2 really overweight kids in my entire class.

Fat was a sign of prosperity (as was pale skin). Fat meant you didn't have to do manual labor. Pale skin meant you didn't have to labor outside (hence "redneck" as a classist insult).

Look at all the fat, pale chicks in the paintings of Rubens.

This changed around WWI, as people started to consider thin bodies more desirable, along with suntans (getting more sun was now thought to be healthy)

People still cooked meals in the 80s and “screen time” was basically evening news, Johnny Carson and MTV.

Look at rock concerts from the sixties and seventies.

No fat hippies in attendance!

I've never been to Fenway Park in Boston, but several friends have. That place is like 100 years old. Everyone who has been there talks about how narrow the aisles are and how small the seats are. People 100 years ago weren't fat asses like they are now.

My dad was skinny coming out of the army at 30 years old. Ten years later he was 50 pounds overweight. I thought he was fat because he drank beer after work sometimes.

We cooked at home and all five of us sat around a table and ate good meals. Eating McDonald’s or a pizza maybe happened 5 times per year.

Correlation isn't causation but the decline of smoking matched the rise of obesity nicely

fast food boom & high fructose syrup boom

Sugar wasn't nearly as bad. 80s soft drinks in badass glass were the shite.

I was born in the late 80's but I've seen family pictures and videos and it seemed like morbid obesity was a lot less common. There were some girthy people, but not at the grossly diabetic looking fricks you see now.

Obesity rates have tripled in the US in the last 50 years. It's certainly not just something made up by posters on here.
