How big a piece of property do you need to feel isolated?

Say I want to chunk it all and buy my own little fiefdom and stick a cabin in the middle of some woods away from the world.

What's the minimum acreage I would need? 75 acres? More? Less?

Depends on how dense the woods were and the terrain.

I'd have to be able to see, hear, or smell none of my neighbors.

This is exactly what I'll be doing once my wife can work from home.

Minimum for me is 100 acres. I might go a bit lower if the property backs up to national forest land.

kinda depends on the surrounding area, no?

my parents have 50 acres, but it is surrounded on 3 sides by 30,000 acres of Kisatchie National Forest

you can hear an occasional dog barking in the distance or a loud truck drive by on the highway (their driveway is 0.4 miles), but other than that, it feels pretty isolated

40 Acres back home where I lived for about 10 years. It was plenty for me. I think even 20 would do for most people.

I am surrounded by 4 million acres of park and preserve now btw. lol.

It's not necessarily how big your plot is as much as the owners next to you and theirs. Buy strategically and 40 acres could seem like a 1000.

I used to have 25 and our house sat right in the middle of it. I felt plenty isolated.

There was a few years I only owned 6.5 acres, but my closest neighbor was just at 1 mile from me. Had 3 fishing ponds I had access to. Family sold 200 acres around me to a real estate developer and let’s just say within 1 year I had neighbors all up and down my road. Wished I’d had the money to buy that 200 acres back then. I moved away

Eta: Not my family but family that owned all that land

350 acres would be perfect.

Don't need a ton of acreage to feel isolated. Could just be in the middle of nowhere.

my brother has 20 acres, but he is surrounded on all 4 sides by national forest and his nearest neighbor is over 2 miles away

so even though he has less property, his place can feel more isolated, although his house is closer to the access road, so he can hear/see more traffic, although it isn't much

I thought 6 acres was enough until I moved

100 acres is not enough if you live next to a chicken farm. 1 acre is plenty if it's in a national forest inholding.

Perfect example. I'd love to find some like this in the Arkansas Ouchitas. Especially if it had a good running creek for a micro hydro generator system.

I grew up on 80 acres in the middle of nowhere but we could still see another house when the leaves died during winter

Problem is everyone from California and NY wanna do the exact same damn thing. At some point, Arkansas is gonna be like Colorado where areas that use to be beautiful, rural scenery, are now just full of houses and suburbs.
