Some think of it for years as a last resort they never resort to. But some finally do. For others it's a sad sudden impulse like my friend who drank all the whiskey he could to deaden the pain the night his girlfriend married somebody else and made a permanent drunken impulsive life ending split second decision.

Yeah - exempting people with end of life questions, and/or terminal, debilitating, painful diseases - suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Whenever I think I have it bad, I think about these little cats:

Kids having fun

Because if they can run around happy, so can I.

Well sometimes the brain chemicals mix together in weird ways and there's nobody there to remind you of the little cats.

*breadth So my twenty year long battle with depression/bipolar disorder, years of seeing a counselor and psychiatrist, a couple of psych ward stays, some psych classes in college, a general interest in the topic and a BP uncle who committed suicide, all of which have led me to do somewhat extensive reading on the topic are trumped by what? You a doctor?

Yes to all of the above.

Published author, medical director, forensic consultant, and clinical psychiatrist.

I am usually here to have fun and joke around in good fraternity fun.

This topic struck a nerve.

This topic strikes a nerve with me every time. It's very personal to me. I've experienced the pain of wanting to die

I can't believe with that background you wouldn't be more sentimental to people's plight

Hijack. Can you recommend a good sleeping pill? I'm trying to get off Seroquel.

Gotta agree with Paige on this one. For someone who knows so much about the subject, dragonmaster certainly isn't very understanding of it.

Paige - I've struggled with insomnia in the past - not a doctor, but I would try this:

No caffeine after 1 p.m. Shut down all electronic devices, yes your phone too, approximately 30 to 45 minutes prior to your bedtime. Don't have ANY artificial sources of light in your bedroom. If you have to have your phone in there for alarm purposes or what have you - turn on "night mode" or whatever so it doesn't flash or make notifications all night.

Get into a routine - read a book you want to read, but perhaps isn't the most stimulating - non-fiction or something - stick with the routine until you're sleeping 6 to 7 hours on the reg.

If that just doesn't work, try the melatonin supplements first.

I've been stuck for 2 to 3 weeks at times, getting only about 2 hours of sleep at night and a short nap in the afternoon - but I've gotten through it. Worst stretch I had was a couple of months and I considered going to the doc for Ambien. Ultimately the old fashioned way will work, but it requires a good bit of effort.

Im not usually a prick on here, but I feel sorry for each and every patient you see as a doctor.

Oh yeah - if you get off the Seroquel - you're going to be cycling for days.

Are you going/staying on lithium? Is Ambien still an option?

do you have any idea the statistics on how many times people have previously thought of or tried to commit suicide before their final fatal attempt?

Do you really think for most people it's a snap judgement that they never before considered?

I wish everyone who commented in this thread had some sort of knowledge about the subject

That's not what I meant at all.

I was just trying to give the OP a simplified reason as to why someone, in that particular moment, would do such a thing.

Don't be so defensive.

I feel bad for your patients if all you think of someone committing suicide is that they're selfish

For some reason, my brain is wired differently than most people. I never was able to be sad until a few years ago. Then, if I am supposed to be, I get sad for a minute or so and then it turns into anger. Don't know why, but that's my dominant emotion. Never have been able to be happy for more than a minute or two either

Google depression and suicide. You will learn a lot about the depressed mind. They thought they were doing you a favor by leaving this earth. They killed themselves out of an immense love for you and their closest friends and family.
