The point remains that few people need pickups, fewer will actually use them, and fewer still can actually afford them.

Never change OT. No matter the topic or the data, the OT is always the exception and NEVER the rule.

All the replies to the article will be some variation of "well ACKSHUALLY i use my truck to haul a trailer every single day or I take my boat out every weekend".

96% of auto loans in this country are current.

Only about 4% are delinquent.

Looks like people can afford them...

The biggest thing is, I don't need until I need it, then I'm glad I have it. It's been useful far too often more me to go rent a uhaul pickup or find a friend who has one.

I'd say I use mine 2-4 times per month, but your mileage might vary.

I could probably downsize to a Tacoma or Colorado once the kids are all out of the house in a year or two. Those would also do 95% of what I use mine for, they just don't have as comfortable back seats.

Making the payments doesn't mean you can afford the car. Don't be dense.

Ever heard of being car poor or house poor?

Ok we need a thread with more details and top posts about this place. It must be extremely entertaining.

I provided simple facts.

Sorry if that's "dense".

Bingo

I have a white Nissan that the paint was peeling all over the god damn place. I found someone to strip, prime and paint it for $1,700. Never had an issue since.

It's something with the white paint they use that it doesn't stick to the primer like it's supposed to. Infiniti and Nissan are notorious for peeling. I've seen it on other white vehicles but if I see a white Nissan, there is a 90% chance that it has peeling paint issues.

A couple of things:
1)What percentage of your stat makes up trucks?

2)The link below quotes 4.4% of folks are in "serious" delinquency, not just delinquent.

Auto loan delinquency on the rise

quote:

According to Cox Automotive, the volume of repossessed vehicles at Manheim auctions, the largest wholesale marketplace, is up 23% year over year through the first half of 2024. They are also up 14% compared with the same period in 2019, according to the data.

While that's only one metric, Cox Automotive senior analyst Jeremy Robb told FOX Business that he also tracks defaults industry-wide using Equifax data. That data suggests that defaults are up 11% during the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2019, Robb said. Lenders can repossess a vehicle when a loan is in default.

Don’t have this problem in the Tahoe.

We are in a bubble with auto and home prices. All bubbles pop eventually, although they can last for years, and the long term trend will still be up.

At some point we'll have an 8+% unemployment rate and the used car lots will be stacked. It's inevitable.

That's the same article I saw.

I didn't see a stat breaking down cars vs trucks, just "auto" loans as a total.

The fact remains that the overwhelming majority of loans are fine, and evidently people can afford them.

But your house is probably 10x nicer.

Our home cost us 1x our annual income
Our vehicles combine to 20% (we have a 10 year old (small) SUV, a 7 year old pickup, and a 20-year old sports car).

I have no complaints of my own belongings or conditions and am lucky to be where I’m at. I do not criticize those who have nicer than me or blindly suggest they change anything that they’re doing. But I honestly dread an even trade to the newer model year of any of these. Our biggest priority is staying out of debt now that we have finally hit the “no non-mortgage debt” phase of life, and it’s hard to save for things and then want to spend it just the same. It’s way harder to write a $50,000 check than to commit $1,000/m for 60 months for some reason. I can’t explain it. But it is.

But we are certainly not hurting or unhappy with a single thing of our living conditions or how we have set ourselves up for the ages of 50, 60, and beyond.

It doesn't say anything about trucks though. Also that's a very static view of the market. You could make an identical argument about subprime mortgages the day before the stock market crashed in 2008.

And a large number of people on here think that if you don't pay cash for it, you can't afford it. That ain't true either.

My work trucks for example. I have the cash to pay for work trucks, but it would be incredibly stupid to take that much cash away from my company just to avoid a $600-700 note. That 50-100k in cash flow is much more important and beneficial to the business.

I'd bet that the numbers you saw in that report certainly include SUVs, light (non-commercial) trucks, and passenger automobiles.

Heck, most domestic manufacturers have just about gotten out of the sedan business altogether.
