Anyone pretending any of the sprawl cities (Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix) are powerhouses when it comes to authentic character are just being ridiculous
Atlanta has arguably the best historical basis for it, but even here we largely manufacture our grit and character. That's not to say that stuff isn't nice to have, or that they're bad places to live, I just have a hard time seeing anyone getting jazzed about spending time in any of those cities for the city alone.
Dallas is by far more aesthetically pleasing and makes the better first impression, which is probably part of the difference for you.
Very well said and very accurate (in my humble, largely Chicago-influenced background and experiences with these cities).
Not hard to find pictures of what I'm talking about. Hard to develop character, and personalities in individual ares of town or neighborhoods, when it's a goddamn free for all and whatever goes wherever. The second article mentions there are basically "five downtowns" in Houston.

Agree with this. The truth is that they're all becoming more similar to one another each year. 20yrs ago Austin was known for Birkenstock wearing hippies who smell like patchouli, Dallas was way too uptight, and Houston was just a sprawled out non-zoned bunch of randomness with some cool stuff scattered around.
Now Austin feels much more like Dallas and Dallas seems to have chilled out quite bit. I haven't spent too much time in Houston in recent years but I have a number of friends and family who live there and it seems to have gotten much much better. Same with Atlanta in the last 10yrs (based on living there for '16 and '17 and hearing stories about how it used to be).

From an outsiders perspective, Dallas is way better than Houston. It seemed cleaner and more modern. Houston was very underwhelming. It was by far my least favorite of the top 10 (population) cities.

Correct answer: Fort Worth

I'd say the same, though Philadelphia would be a close 2nd. Character is not an issue there, but there are other issues to deal with that would suck.

Then maybe you should move because it seems like you dread living in Houston (the woodlands) which i say very lightly.
Dont know why people live somewhere but make it seem like the worst place to live. Dallas has a good economy. Even San Anton. But maybe you just have an issue with Mexicans...

Pro sports: Dallas
College sports: Dallas (TCU is close)
Traffic: Dallas
Weather: Dallas
Friendly people: Houston
Nightlife: Dallas
Less Californians/Yankees: Houston
Job Opps: Push
Better airports: Dallas
Restaurants and "the arts": Houston
Diversity: Houston
Less strange odors in the air: Dallas
Less chance of weirdly colored snow: Dallas
Weight what's important to you and do the math.

Lets revisit this:
Pro sports: Rockets > Mavs. Stros > Rangers. Cowgirls > Texans
College sports: Dallas (TCU is close) - TCU doesn't count if its in another city...
Traffic: Dallas
Weather: Dallas - its been freezing here...Houston can take this
Friendly people: Houston
Nightlife: Push -Midtown and washington ave = uptown and deep ellum
Less Californians/Yankees: Houston
Job Opps: Push
Better airports: Dallas - Really? Dallas airport is beyond huge so nah. Love Field is legit though

Philly is WAY worse than Houston.

Philly is worse weather-wise, but not for the sports fan. Flyers, Eagles, Sixers and Phillies. Plus their suburbs are nice and not too far of a drive to NYC.

absolutely bullshite. Exxon's only locations in the Woodlands area are 2 buildings on Lake Woodlands they lease and the XOM Campus a hundred yards north of 99 and West of 45.

So?
I guess it's easy to think Houston sucks when even good or unique things are considered bad.
Houston has such an expansive medical presence that its facilities create another "downtown?" frick that place.

You don't live in Houston...and what crime and ghettos were you referring to around the fricking Woodlands???
This is a lame troll.

I didn’t want to have to drop the nuke, but houston has owlfan so Dallas wins.

When I was in Katy visiting friends over the weekend, I realized a few things.
I miss the schools - the newer ones which look like college campuses
I miss the excitement of a growing place
I miss the housing options and retail options
I miss HEB
But got damn I do not miss the traffic. Katy traffic can F itself with a rotten stick.
Saturday afternoon, returning to Lakes of Bella Terra from a nice late afternoon lunch at Sweet Tomatoes and some shopping at Memorial City. It's raining. On 99 passing the exit for Highland Knolls, traffic absolutely stops still. Took 55 min to move maybe half a mile or so. I'm thinking there must be a horrific accident with people all over the roadway. I'm mentally preparing myself to explain what the kids are about to see, to them. Finally we approach the location of the horrific accident. It's a single truck, in the middle of the median, with no damage. Looks like he maybe lost control and spun out. A single police car on the shoulder. That's it. 55 min to go 1/2 mile for that. Going the other way, traffic is backed up past Fry.
There is simply too many people out there for the number of major roads they have.
Monday I drove into the city during rush hour to go visit my old office and holy crap that was awful.
As nice as it is out there... the traffic may ruin all of it.
