Not sure if this is awesome or pathetic. All schools are closed within HISD, K-12.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston ISD is closed on Friday - the day of the Astros victory parade - after nearly 1,000 staffers reportedly requested off. According to HISD trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones, 950 of the district's teachers and bus drivers had submitted time off requests. When asked for comment, an HISD spokesperson said the cancellation was a result of "logistical and safety concerns about traffic."

HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza announced that the district's schools, facilities and administrative offices will be closed Friday, Nov. 3, so that students and staff can enjoy the Astros World Series parade and festivities. All athletic events for Friday evening will still take place as scheduled, but field trips are canceled.

Why are you laughing at that? The parade will create an absolute clusterfrick inside the loop around dismissal time. Do you even Houston?

Why would that be pathetic? A world series victory after the terrible events of the hurricane is a huge reason for so many people to celebrate.

Home team championship parades should be local holidays.
Lombardi Gras was a great day here.

The parade route is short, is smack-dab downtown, and is during lunchtime. There are not any HISD schools within several miles of the parade.

I think it's hilarious that almost 1,000 staffers asked off....which I am guessing the requests were put in yesterday.

So do they not know how to deny a request in Houston?

If that many staff requests were put in, imagine how many kids would have actually shown up to school today

2:00 isn't lunch time. It will go to around 3 or so. High school and junior high get out around 3 with elementary around 4. The traffic of people coming and going won't be limited to the parade route either.

Cypress ISD is also. My sister said a good amount of people there had requested off. Nowhere near 950 though.

Humble ISD is open. However, below is the email the kids received:

Humble ISD schools will be open Friday, Nov. 3, as scheduled. Students who are absent for the Astros Parade will have the absence recorded, as required by state education code, and parents must submit notification to the school as required for any type of absence. However, absences on Nov. 3 will not be counted against students for finals exemptions, perfect attendance awards, and other attendance incentives in place at campuses. Humble ISD is proud of the Houston Astros - World Series Champions! #EarnedHistory

Seems like decent way to handle. ALL kids going to parade.

Should've just had the parade tomorrow. Avoid the clusterfrick of parade traffic/road closures on top of people trying to get home from work on a Friday. And more people could attend the parade without having to skip work

Did anybody in Houston actually care about the Astros before they started doing good?

Pretty inconsiderate towards parents who can’t get the day off and now have to figure out childcare.

You people are some miserable fricks. Who gives a shite if little Jerry misses a day of kindergarten? The coloring books will still be there on Monday

Well the problem is the demographics of HISD. Lot of poor, single parent households that can't get the day off last minute for childcare.
