yup, reward motivates better than fear. Sadly 99.99 % of companies don't get it.

The best system is somewhere in the middle, to be honest.

A good family friend of mine owns his own oil company and treats his employees similarly. They all own part of the company and all receive over $50k in bonuses a year, not to mention their salaries are crazy. The receptionist makes like $150k. Its a really close knit group, great company.

hilcorp notoriously underpays their employees compared to the rest of the industry. they would have probably made more in the same time span working for someone else. essentially the bonus hooks the employees in to stay because they dont want to leave that money on the table.

I know a guy who works for them.

He lives down in Refugio. $100k bonus goes a LONG way in Refugio. Holy cow.

Really, I will let me buddies who work there know they are being taken advantage of. Of course, their base pay is at or above market and while the competition is slashing jobs they feel pretty secure but with the fact based insight you have provided they will probably walk out today...

That's a slippery slope. Very slippery. I know a guy who works for one of the largest private companies in the world. The lack of transparency and unilateral decisions can be scary and frustrating he says. Private company can shut down a location and be like "it's underperforming" with no duty to show financials and so on.
