Deputy Garrett Lindley is a moron. The whole time I thought the situation would escalate and result in the black guy getting shot in his own drive way. What a tense standoff.

Texas police try to arrest a black father in his own front yard after mistaking him for a wanted criminal with dreadlocks from Louisiana
quote:
In the tense clip, Deputy Garrett Lindley from the Harris County Police Department can be seen holding Evan’s arm behind his back, and repeatedly calling him by a different name, insisting he has a warrant out for his arrest in Louisiana.
‘You don’t know my name, so how can you tell me I have a warrant in Louisiana?’ Evans asks the officer.
During the five minute long exchange, the white deputy repeatedly asks to see Evans’ ID, referring to him as ‘Quentin’ - the name of the fugitive - and questions him about a stolen dog.
‘My name is not Quentin,’ Evans says while refusing to show his identification. ‘No, I’m not going to be the next [black person] you kill, no.’
‘I’m not going to let you put me in handcuffs…You’re in my yard, on my property…you need to step back and calm down’ Evans adds.
Shortly afterwards, another officer pulls up outside the home in Houston and shows Evans a photograph of the man they’re said to be searching for.
‘Doesn’t that look a lot like you?’ Deputy Lindley can be heard asking.
‘No, that don’t look like me,’ Evans retorts, later elaborating in his caption of the video that the officers had shown him a photo of a black man with dreadlocks who appeared to be over 50-years-old.

NowThis is a SJW shite organization, but that guy had every right to be mad. He could've been more cooperative in providing ID, but frick it, I'd probably be pissed too.
This shite happens to white people, too. I'll never forget in college, a BRPD unit rolled up next to my buddy walking down E Boyd and told him to put his hands on the hood. He did as he was told and was put in the back of the car for an hour because they thought he was a guy who just beat the shite out of some girl around the corner. They finally let him go and when they did, they released the cuffs and told him to get out of here.

I don’t know what race has to do with this and I don’t understand why the cop didn’t know what the fugitive looked like and I don’t understand why the dude could not simply show his ID

Yeah, he has every right to be pissed like he was. That situation could’ve gone very bad real quick

The victim didnt need to bring race into it, but I dont blame him one bit for being mad. Id have reacted the same way.

No reason to, he has rights and he wasn’t doing anything. This isn’t a totalitarian police state

I was profiled once in the Albertsons at Florida and Sherwood when I was in high school. White kid with longer hair in the back (not true mullet cut) and was stopped by security outside store because they thought I didn’t pay for my prescription drug. Store manager admitted his overzealous security guy began watching me as soon as I walked in the store. It happens.
I too would be pissed if I was this guy in his own yard HOWEVER I would have assisted in helping the officer find the right guy by showing some form of ID even if the law doesn’t require me to. Cop overstepped no doubt but somebody wants to get paid so they would rather not comply with any request rather than assist with finding the right guy.

These white cops aren’t racist. They just stupid. I would have let them arrest me. Get a lawyer then sue.

Hopefully the deputy was acting in good faith and not being a dumb racist. If it honestly looked similar. That’s enough reasonable suspicion to detain him and identify him.
Just show your ID if you are detained. If you truly are innocent, show ID and you will be released.

This right here. The law allows for a brief investigative detention in the presence of reasonable suspicion of a crime. That period is supposed to allow both parties to calmly communicate and investigate if a crime occurred / if they have the right guy. That is how our society is supposed to function.
The problem is when you have an officer who can’t rationally communicate his suspicions to the suspect or perform an investigation coupled with a suspect who is being uncooperative and looking to make everything about race from the get-go. Either party could have kept this from happening but neither one was capable or willing.

Way to set a good example for your kids, why not just show your freaking ID and move on
Idiot

Doesn't change the fact that he could have ended all the confusion by showing it. That would be too easy and sensible and would hurt his lawsuit against the dept.

That is stupid of him... If the officer is calling him by a different name it is obviously a case of mistaken identity why would you refuse to show your ID?

If he had not verbally resisted so strongly,he would at the least been handcuffed and put in the back car.
I was pulled over and detained for being a white guy driving a certain model car.Someone fitting that description was a fugitive wife beater.
I was never in any danger of being arrested, like that guy was.
I was pulled over by a young State Trooper. He told me when the local police arrived I could leave,if I wasn't their fugitive.
That guy should have been pissed. But,just for the sake of not getting shot in front of your kids,he could have shown his I.D.,etc..

Tell the frickstick to run the plates. There are thousands of cars that color and a "white guy" isn't very descriptive.
I've been pulled over several times in a week because my truck was the same color as a guy they were looking for. (There were three of them in a town of 5000) To say I wasn't very nice to them the third time in 3 days is an understatement. Came very close to filing a complaint and frankly should have.

I typically defend LEO here, never HPD. They are a shite organization, and most of the officers are glorified amber lamp golf cart drivers

Shortly after moving into a new rent house in college I was awakened by really loud banging on the front door. I look outside and see that it was a sheriffs deputy. Naturally, I’m like WTF is going on here. Here’s how the conversation transpired:
Cop: Are you Jason XXXXX? I have a warrant for his arrest for issuing worthless checks.
Me: No, that’s the previous tenant. I just moved in.
Cop: OK, can I see your ID?
Me: Yeah sure, hold on just a second?
Booyow retrieves his ID and shows it to cop.
Cop: OK, thanks. Do you have any contact information for Jason XXXXX?
Me: No, I don’t
Cop: OK, thanks. Have a good day.
This whole encounter lasted about 2 minutes. While it doesn’t exactly mirror the events in the video bc the cop is trying to match a picture to the guy, the end result could have been the same if the guy would have just proven who he was...or wasn’t in this case.

Refused to show ID. Stopped there. I'm white. I would be quick to show my id and get along with my day. But I'm not privileged.
