Hospitals on the front lines of the pandemic are engaged in a heated private debate over a calculation few have encountered in their lifetimes — how to weigh the “save at all costs” approach to resuscitating a dying patient against the real danger of exposing doctors and nurses to the contagion of coronavirus.

The conversations are driven by the realization that the risk to staff amid dwindling stores of protective equipment — such as masks, gowns and gloves — may be too great to justify the conventional response when a patient “codes,” and their heart or breathing stops.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago has been discussing a do-not-resuscitate policy for infected patients, regardless of the wishes of the patient or their family members — a wrenching decision to prioritize the lives of the many over the one.

Richard Wunderink, one of Northwestern’s intensive-care medical directors, said hospital administrators would have to ask Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker for help in clarifying state law and whether it permits the policy shift.
“It’s a major concern for everyone,” he said. “This is something about which we have had lots of communication with families, and I think they are very aware of the grave circumstances.”

I'm sorry, but if I'm paying for insurance, they better do whatever it takes to save my life. This isn't the damn UK.

I wonder if they have one of those "Heroes work here" signs out front?

this article seems misleading (at least for now)

this appears to be hospitals having a "plan" in case the worst-case scenario unfolds.

Believe it or not insurance companies exist to make sure you pay more than they do.

I wouldnt expect too much cooperation once they start paying way more than your premiums are worth.

That's the Obama Administration hack that got busted out for this false rumor.

Dr Birx Shreds media for false claims -dailywire Birx said. “Please, for the reassurance of people around the world, to wake up this morning and look at people talking about creating DNR situations, do not resuscitate situations for patients, there is no situation in the United States right now that warrants that kind of discussion.”

So if a 5 year old with weak lungs codes these Drs are cool with just saluting him and walking out of the room?

Over reaction. This has been happening for months and we didnt know about it.

It’s only once people heard about the corona that vent beds became needed. That sore throat I got in December was the worst cold I never had so it was obviously corona

My dad told me that he doesn’t want to be resuscitated if he’s ever stuck on a ventilator and the prognosis isn’t good. I told him it’s only good if he writes it down somewhere. So far—nothing in writing.

Tough titty. They wrote the contract.

Maybe the insurance company should have gotten insurance in case something like this happened.

Nobody signed up for being exposed to a pandemic with substandard or no protective equipment. It’s a terrible situation both ways, but to act like this is what anybody “signed up for” is idiotic.

And I promise you that said contract doesn’t obligate them to doing whatever needed to save lives.

Will not happen unless they end up in a situation that is completely uncontrollable.

The lawsuits would be epic in number and there would likely be zero defense.

If they want to go down that route, there needs to be a governmental order and that still likely would be shot down in the courts.

Dr. Birx disavowed this fake news in yesterday’s (3/26/20) press briefing.
