But you are 100% correct.
In the 50s and 60s, homebuyers were often 1 income households (but married).
In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, 2 household incomes pushed home prices higher.
It is rare for a single person to have the disposable income to save up for a home. That hasn't changed the last 30 years. They are competing against 2 income households for everything (including apartment rent)

In suburban rings immediately around the city, with each ring getting further, and further, and further away from where the jobs are. Do you not see a difference between buying 15 minutes outside of the city versus an hour outside of the city?

I grew up in the deep south with no A/C, no cable or satellite TV.
Never ate out except on vacation (sometimes) and that wasn't even every year.

This isn't generational.
Each generation has had hardships.
What we have today is a bubble that blew outward in 2022 which has neither burst nor regulated with higher incomes and flat growth.
It is harder "today". But this bubble is not different than bubbles in the past.

What was there before the suburban ring? Literally cows.
And as the suburbs were created immediately outside the city, that pushed lower prices outward to the next ring of cows.
As the suburbs expanded to the 2nd ring, the interior rings changed from suburbs to business districts.
But it literally always started with cow pastures.

You seem to think at some point in the past it cost the same to live 15 min from the city vs 45 min to an hour away.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. It has always been much cheaper the further you go out from the center.
Maybe since you are doing so well (as you say) you should start a go fund me for your little buddies on here who you like to whip up about how hard they have it.

fricking duh. My point was that people “buying in the country” were vastly closer to the city than people “buying in the country” now.
Put another way, buying 15 minutes from the city center is vastly more expensive now than it was, say, thirty years ago.

No shite. No one is denying this. The point is that in some areas the cost equivalent of what use to be buying a house 30 minutes outside of the city is now buying a house 1.5 hours outside of the city.
