I hold the door open for everyone and don't expect anyone to say anything. If they do I know they were raised like me. If they don't then frick them and they aren't worth my time.

This is such a quintessential southern thing and i love it. I work with quite a few people from up north that a recent transplants and all of them comment on how polite random people are in the south.

Had a funny experience regarding this a few years ago. I was walking into a building and a young woman was not far behind. I opened the door and stepped back to let her walk first. She gave me some gobbledegook about not needing a door opened for her. I looked at her and said “ if you don’t respect yourself, nobody else will either”.
I hope it made her think a little.

Couldn’t have said it better. I do it because it’s how I was raised, not to illicit a response.

It’s not just women who don’t say thank you when you hold a door for them. I get that from men too. What’s really lacking is good manners from people in general. They just don’t know how to behave in public anymore.

Holding a door open is done out of courtesy, not out of hoping someone will recognize how awesome and thoughtful you are. It doesn't bother me if someone doesn't say "thanks".
