Hockey masks in vehicles

Does anyone know why people hang those hockey masks in their vehicles?
I have seen so many people with them. Is there a meaning behind them? Is this a means by which people are trying to convey they are mentally unstable?

I believe he's referring to people that hang the Jason style hockey mask off their rear view mirror.

I see this 3/4 times a month. It seems to be a thing with young black males. Telling the world they are a badass, maybe? It’s been a thing for 15 years. There was a thread here on it in 2008 according to the internet.

Besides looking pretty stupid it's a quick way to get a traffic ticket for an "obstructed view" in a lot of states.

There's a red Charger in Hammond and a purple Charger in BR that have the hockey mask hanging on the rear view. Both have rims/tires that appear to cost more than the vehicle and both could use a good body shop.
