I saw one the other day in a car, it is my understanding that they are used for protection against the rampant truck nut epidemic.

Saw 2-3 of these last week around GA.
Probably the same thing. Loud POS cars, nice rims, drove like an a-hole.

The origin of it is Japan, where drivers in car clubs that race on the highways (called kanjo) in Osaka would wear masks to maintain anonymity from police/street cameras.

Most hockey masks I see are in Chargers, which the OT knows, are trashy AF.

I don’t think so, I’ve noticed it throughout the year. They are on everything from 18 wheelers to civics. Mostly chargers though.

So this is in addition to over sized exhaust pipes on civics?

People have been modifying the exhaust systems on their cars and motorcycles to be louder for far longer than "import/JDM" culture has existed stateside.

If you want to see some really outlandish shite, Google "Bosozoku cars"

Can’t believe no one has posted the meaning of the masks:
It’s a gang.

Is a way to distinguish to other drivers the owner is a member of a certain gang. One article was written a while back about a murder taking place when someone confronted a driver that had the mask hanging from his rearview mirror.

it used to be a reference to Friday the 13th movies (as FR33 said).

Don't know WTF young people think it means now. Their historical perspective starts with the day of their birth. So they are likely displaying something the origin of which they are completely ignorant.

Somone who lived in my aparment complex used to have a hockey mask on the head rest of the passenger seat, and also put a hoodie over the seat so it looked like someone was sitting there.

Do you frequent the island of Cyprus? That's what those license plates are for.
