Why would you take a job that has a salary cap?

Many engineering jobs have a salary cap per level.

They don't want a 60 year old L3 engineer making $300k with low expectations. (Except the FAANGs, they crazy)

Its basically if you want more earn a promotion.

Why would you not be looking for a promotion? If you are comfortable as said, sure stay. But if you stay comfortable in that job for years you’ll potentially start to lose your ability to get a better job elsewhere also as you will look complacent.

Well that sucks.

I didn't know that was a thing. I guess I thought you got paid what you could negotiate.

This Fortune 500 company sounds highly bureaucratic, government like. They apparently set pay based on titles rather than performance, contribution and value. Many people find comfort and security in that environment.

The wildebeest in the middle of the herd lives a pitiful existence relative to the ones leading the way. The leaders breath clean air, eat clean grass and drink clean water, but the lions only eat ones near the edge, not the ones in the middle of the mass.

My cap was changed. I am now above my pay grade and above the next pay grade. I was going to stick it out for the 11 percent pension, well about that….it got reduced to 3 percent, so I am looking. Most of the folks ready to retire aren’t looking, but I have 15-20 years left and I want career growth.

I hit my salary cap. No one in my job can make more than $195,200, despite the fact that my pay grade states I *should* be getting paid $202K+. It sucks balls.

Is that $7,000 missing a year really bothering you? That $175 a paycheck?

Understandable, however:

That’s a looong time from now man.

I don’t think you have to be in a hurry if the money is good, but you should be thinking about what’s next, even if it’s a lateral move.

“Locking yourself in” at your age could do some damage to your career and any aspirations you might have in the future. It’s not even about the capped salary IMO, it’s about how you’ll be perceived later on.

If you can’t negotiate for more money, then try to get other perks. Use your imagination. What about your job would you improve. Ask for those things.

Salary bands for a specific role are pretty standard at most corporations in the country.

Sounds like OP is at the top of his and will go no further unless he gets promoted out of that band, which he doesn’t seem to care for, hence his question.

It really depends. I worry about that because I already make decent money with 30 years to go.

I assume I'll cap at some point in next 10.

They pay your increase in cash if you cap.

That's a waste in my opinion and I'd think hard about leaving the company if I can't reclass.

yeah, because next year it's $10K or 15K. Two years from now its 20K.

Capping out on your step or merit increases is a terrible thing.

Look for another job. Part of why I moved to program management was I was getting towards top of my pay band as an engineering manager. It was a lateral move (LG5 to LG5)but pay band higher as an PM and the bonus structure is much higher.
