But the only answer to this question is Ross Perot! He was Trump before Trump. People forget he might have won in 92 had he not gotten out of the race, and didn't get back in until he could get on the ballot in all 50 states.

I think he had plenty of advanced warning but decided to focus his attention on huge tax cuts instead. At some semi-conscious level, he probably figured, "I hate taxes and I don't mind a war or two" and what he did and did not do reflected this attitude.

Starting with Obama the path to the presidency became "Ignite your base, ignore the rest...." Granted, most of Obama's words didn't suggest that - but the actions of his entire base and campaign team most certainly did. His facebook followers in particular were absurdly divisive in the first-ever election w/social media influence.
Trump is largely the second coming of that methodology, but less refined politically and who makes no attempts to communicate across the aisle. My largest fear is this setting the stage for President SJW/Antifa.

To add to it, though, I am a political conservative but there was no way I was going to vote for McCain. He was profoundly lacking in personal integrity. Look at what happened on the USS Forrestal, or how he behaved in captivity, or the Sarah Palin stupidity, or the way he suddenly turned into an Obamacare proponent. It is not an exaggeration to lump him in with the criminally insane and even the genocidal. The level of narcissism is similar.

He would have suffered the same fate as the rest of the establishment Republicans.
During the primaries, it was Trump vs. a dozen established Republicans who were all splitting a vote, meanwhile Trump was collecting nearly all the votes from the more nationalist leaning as well as the "Just pissed off" crowd. It seemed like the right had a longer term strategy of courting the Hispanic vote (who are growing in number, and are Conservative except for that 'one' issue - especially if this SJW Shiite continues), and that left a hole for Trump to jump through.
The Democrats "solved" this problem by using superdelegates who are actually in control of the whole thing no matter what the public votes - hence Hilary, and now Biden.

I should have posted this when you first made the thread, but you didn't list presidents that lost reelection.
I wonder how things would be different if George Bush hadn't lost to Clinton. He would have handled the bombing of the world trade center differently along with the uss Cole and al-qaeda in general.
