I think 2024 likely sees Harris vs either Rubio, Cruz, or Nikki Haley. (If Harris is Senile Joe's pick there's no way Pence stays on the ticket...enter Haley or perhaps Tim Scott. Pence will get killed by/with Harris' bitchy courtroom shite.)
Don't sleep on Tom Cotton in 2024, he would be an amazing president if he could reel in the moderates at all; he might be a little TOO conservative to get the slightly left-leaning ones though.
He's had some "controversial" opinions here and there (I always agree with them but they're not the most PC) and is a staunch constitutionalist, so he'd have to work on his broad appeal a bit. Otherwise he would be a great leader and president to follow DJT.

Dole's nomination was more of a lifetime achievement award from the party. It was painfully obvious that Clinton was going to get another term after racing to the center following Republicans killing him in the '94 mid term elections.

I view it by ground troops. I think you would have seen troops coming out of Iraq earlier and force coming through targeted bombing with drones and B-2s. Very similar to how we dealt with the Balkans. Barry did things piecemeal and allowed Russia and ISIS to fill the void in Syria. I also highly doubt he would've sent a planeload of cash to Iran nor put up with their shite.
I do wonder how much would've been different if he won the 2000 nomination.

Running as an independent, I doubt it. He may have done what TR did in '12 and take votes away from the sitting president.
Interesting idea you bring up... if RFK isn't assassinated, does he win '68? Whether or not you like RFK, the book 'The Last Campaign' is a fantastic read.

Hard to say. He was certainly building momentum with that primary win in California. George Wallace's general election performance in the South may have been more impactful on the overall outcome.

Sure, but the question is "who would have made a good president", and I agree with the OP that Dole would have.

One minor correction. The dotcom bubble burst the spring before the election... that is 100% on Bill being more interested in daydreaming about fricking Monica's mouth than of actually helping the country. Anyone who was paying attention could see the market downturn coming post- election. 9/11 happened actually set in motion the change of events which blunted the recession. It was five with tax cuts, bailouts for airlines, new government jobs (TSA/Air Marshalls), and more people entering the navy.
Ike famously warned about the industrial military complex on his way out the door. Going direct from VP to President would have virtually assured less traditional military action would have taken place under a 1961-69 Nixon presidency.

Cotton and Mike Lee would be great choices in a vacuum. The electoral map puts both of them at a bit of a disadvantage though. If Trump gets to fill RBG's seat before the end of the year I think Lee has to be the pick. Roberts is turning into Anthony fricking Kennedy and can't be counted on anymore.
Depending on the next 4 years there's a 3rd generation Bush who I think would be a solid choice if voters want to go young again. A Texas Hispanic may be needed to keep that state red. In a perfect world Jim Jordan would run but he's got the wrestling coach skeleton and I think he enjoys fricking with the Democrats too much to leave the House.
