I find it hard to believe that they would claim a vehicle is missing and not file a police report for their insurance/company purposes.

Not sure if all branches handle unreturned cars the same way.

I had a 5 am drop at the Hertz at PHX. Parked in a return spot and dropped the keys in the box. Later got a letter later saying I had kept the car 18 days past it's return date, and if I didn't return it immediately, they were going to report it stolen. They threatened a warrant for my arrest. They did not, however, charge my card for the cost of the car.

I had this happen to me once as well, kind of. I dropped off the car at the airport for an early morning flight. I received a call a few days later that I never turned in the car. I had to jump through hoops with the airline to prove that I was on the flight that flew out of the airport that I dropped the car off at. Provided that to Hertz and they then said “oh, yea we found the car. The drop off location failed to check it in…”. I spent a fair amount of time with the airline on hold and then explaining what I needed just for hertz to admit they had a dumb arse.

On another nite, I wonder how many people get charged this money and never fight it. Either they stole the car or they just don’t notice a $xx,xxx charge on their credit card. I can’t imagine this is a large revenue driver for hertz

The damn car is probably sitting at the airport parking where you left it. Go look for it.

Amex really is the hardest card to get a chargeback reversed. I used to be in charge of chargebacks for a resort where I was working. If you don't have a signature on literally everything, you're screwed. I'm surprised hotels accept Amex for booking rooms at all, because no one signs a room receipt these days. You can get away with clear fraud if you use an Amex and then dispute the charges.

Funny you bumped this today, it actually finally got resolved Tuesday of this week...when Capital One disputed the charge I was credited back the 10k, then some how I was credited another 9,700...so for a few days I had a positive credit of that amount...Hertz never responded to any of my calls or emails

Awesome!

I've had several run-ins with Hertz. Nothing like this, but have always been left extremely unimpressed.

Sounds like they found the car and don’t want to admit it.

They probable eventually found the car and realized that they had fricked up. I would pull my credit reports after a few months to be sure they didn’t frick you.

Had a minor fender bender in a hertz. Filed police report and claim with the hertz insurance policy when I returned the car. 5 months later get a call saying I owed them 3500 for damages. Nope had insurance. So sorry but we don’t see that. Back and forth back and forth. The accident was in July of 16 and I finally just settled for 900.
