re: Here's a life lesson: Don't enroll into an online masters program at USC for $200K

Let's not forget that not every Penny of those loans is going to tuition and books. These fools are using a lot of it for "living expenses" as well. Extending their college careers to avoid working and living off the loans while hitting the bars and restaurants every night. I see kids eating in the same nice places in BR I can now only afford after building a career. When I was in school, I worked a couple of part time jobs and ate Ramen Noodles and Mac n Cheese. A big night was when I ordered Dominos. But I managed to get out of school without debt.
What ever happened to the struggling college student?

The schools should be the only authorized underwriter of a student loan.
This will make sure that they lend money to people actually studying things that allow them to payback the loan.

Because people are willing to pay for it?

Mcdonalds pay for managers is $63,829 per year starting
As a McDonald's manager, I bet she could also do a lot community mental health therapy. She'd get to do what she loves while making about 33% more money. The problem is that salary probably still wouldn't touch that $300k+ student loan debt since I bet the average interest rate is probably over 6%.

Sure, but you can't get a mortgage or auto loan for 300k on a 48k salary. Those have collateral that can at least be sold to offset some, if not all of the debt. Student loans should be scrutinized even more so, since they are based on presumably only a potential income.
I’m old enough to remember when liberals considered that a racists attitude. You can thank Obama for this.

Most aren't. They're hoping for forgiveness.

College tuition is a function of the government taking over the loans and subsidizing them and millions of idiots falling for the idea that they have to have a 4-year degree to be successful.
Just like in healthcare when you have a bureaucratic middle-man between the payer and the payee, prices go out of control.
Gots to pay for the various bloated administration positions, especially the uber important Diversity, Inequity, and Exclusion (DIE)* departments!
*purposefully written that way.

Yale does this too. They offer an online Physician Assistant program that cost $100k. More than double most state schools but you have the online convenience. You still have to do rotations in person but you won't have to relocate for classwork.

If your kids ever talk about pursuing a career, put your foot down.
This is such a tricky subject. Because we need people in those professions and they're so important, yet because they're criminally underpaid, that it discourages many people (myself included) from making that a career.
Mental health professionals should be making $50k+ for entry-level jobs and should be paid more than that in a lot of cases.

People can buy or sell these ridiculously priced things, as long as I don't have to pay for them.

Social work type jobs pay a lot less than they probably should.

obviously the solution is to pay community mental-health therapists $350k a year
The irony is I bet the University of Iowa, Iowa State, or any other legitimate brick and mortar in Iowa probably offered an online Masters in counseling and human development that would’ve gotten her the same exact thing for a third of the price.
When I shopped around for my M.Ed. I found the cheapest accredited program in state. Still had the same clinical training (and some of the same professors) as bigger programs in my state.
People are stupid.

By people do you mean US taxpayers? Because the govt is the real culprit here. Student loan debt is directly related to the huge bubble in college tuition costs.

I made significantly more than that in private mental health for this year as an associate.
Even community mental health for an LPCA starts out at $55k with benefits here in Kentucky (Seven Counties) and they’ll pay for your supervision.

You can get an online MBA from LSU-S for like $10k
The chasm between USC and LSU makes them basically different degrees
This is simply not true. Now, if it's in film at USC one might have an argument, but even then it's a weak one... Yes, a USC degree can get you an interview, but you still have to make your way up in the industry on actual ability.
You responded to an MBA, not a film degree. Most people getting an MBA are doing it to give them more upward mobility in their current company. In that case, getting a $10K LSU MBA is absolutely a fair comparison to a $200K USC MBA. No way the USC degree is worth 20x, probably not even 2x depending on the networking one might rely on post-degree.
And I'd bet the return on investment for an MBA in the social work field is also much better at LSU than USC.

Nope. Why are people paying $200k for an on-line degree?

A few facts to help frame this discussion:
1. Half of the people in the US have an IQ at or below 100. These people do not have the intellectual capacity to understand cost vs benefit analysis.
2. The people with IQ’s above 100 have been bombarded by every teacher since KG telling them “you have to get a college degree”.
Then, you add a government that allows predatory lending like college and 7 year car notes and interest only mortgages.
It’s a recipe for disaster and the only way to fix it is to place the risk on the lender. It would stop immediately.
