Why is USC selling people a 200k degree that will never pay off?

These schools also need to be held accountable for this. They shouldn’t be able to charge that much money for a worthless degree.

Sure, but you can't get a mortgage or auto loan for 300k on a 48k salary. Those have collateral that can at least be sold to offset some, if not all of the debt. Student loans should be scrutinized even more so, since they are based on presumably only a potential income. If the value isn't there, it shouldn't be an option. If the universities had more stake in the game, student loan debt wouldn't be the issue that it is in this country.

The program I'm gonna take at USM is 22k, and that's with out of State tuition. It seems insane to me that someone would sign up for a 200k degree to do social work.

Schools shouldn’t get their money until payments start coming in.

Higher education is (almost) a complete fraud.

Only doctors should get in that much debt because it’s the only safe profession that will almost always be needed anywhere

Spare me. This woman is stupid and makes poor decisions. Simple as that.

How are going to quantify potential value on a degree?. That’s based on the degree holder more than whatever degree they hold.

It’s an overpriced POS degree. Same as buying a Jeep. But the buyer is still responsible for buying it.

Why can't both things be true at the same time? Schools have gotten absolutely predatory when it comes to giving out huge loans they know can never be paid back or discharged via bankruptcy. They get their money upfront, what do they care? This system is broken

We have conditioned kids in high school that the only way you can do anything in life is get a degree. So you have people who have no business or desire to be in college taking massive loans out because they believe they have to get a degree. Colleges then prey on them with massive costs for things like women’s studies which have little to no return.

Reality is many people would be better off learning a skill or trade for a fraction of the cost and getting a productive job.

Are you suggesting no one seek higher learning unless they have cash on hand to pay for it?

This whole idea of a "prestigious " name on the degree is a huge farce.

did she really think that the "prestigious name" would be needed for a community mental-health therapist in Iowa?
