Looking for 2015 or later Camry/accord/civic type car with around 100k on it. My budget is $15-$17k. Other than the aforementioned cars, what other small cars have a reputation for extreme reliability for several hundred thousand miles? I'm not at all familiar at all with Mazda, Kia, Hyundai, etc.

Corolla or Equinox. Maybe a Maverick.

Why ever bother looking at others?

The Camry, Corolla, and Civic are the gold standards. I just found a '15 Corolla with 65,000 for $16,000 near me on cars.com. I see a '14 Corolla with 140,000 miles for $9,000.

Mazda6 a good car too. I got one for my stepdaughter when she started driving. Unfortunately it lasted a couple months before it got totaled (not her fault). Replaced it with an Accord which is still running strong 6 years later.

Mazda 3 are pretty good cars. I drove a KIA Soul for 5 years and didn't have any engine issues.

Don't get a kia soul or any vehicle with a NU 2.0L GDI engine , they have major seal issues that lead to major oil consumption as early 80K, your cataltic converter getting clogged as a result, and eventually oil in your cyclinders and needing a new engine.

They have done a recall basically, but the knock sensor has to have been triggered.

quote:

The order affects nearly 300,000 cars, including the 2012-2013 Sorento, 2012-2015 Forte and Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid, 2014-2015 Soul, and 2012 Sportage. Some of these vehicles are at risk of fuel and oil leaks within the engine. NHTSA says the leaks may ignite a fire.

Dealers will inspect each car for leaks and make any needed repairs. This could include a complete engine swap. The automaker also promises an update to the Knock Sensor Detection System to warn owners if a leak develops.

The Kia recall comes in the wake of last week’s Hyundai engine campaign. Certain Santa Fe, Sonata Hybrid, and Veloster models are subject to a recall over connecting rod bearing failures. Hyundai hopes to solve this issue with a Knock Sensor Detection System update, and possible engine replacement.

Last week, the automaker agreed to the largest civil penalty in history — $210 million – after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has failed to recall 1.6 million vehicles with potential engine problems in a timely manner.

Thats the first article I saw, but it effects more years than that. Anything with that engine.

Mitsubishi Mirage. No resell Value - may find a brand new one for less than $17K. 43 MPG, best safety rating in its class and one of the most reliable cars in the world according to most ratings. Not overly popular in the US because of a small dealer network and cheap finishes like seat mounts being visible and not covered by carpet and SLOW accelerating but for basic, reliable and cheap transportation they are hard to beat. You can get a 1 year old Mirage G4 with 20k on it around me for around $12k. The hatchback model (Mirage) is basically the same car but is slightly smaller.

The Mirage has a 3 cylinder engine so it is not a speed demon...it is fast enough to drive (merging etc) but will not run 120 mph. It will run 80 for days and get 43 MPG while doing so....and will do it safely and reliably. I bought a 2022 Mirage 11 months ago with 5400 miles on it for $8400. It now has 27419 miles on it and other than changing the oil it has done what I bought it to do...commute to work 46 miles one way. I spend less than $30 a week getting to work and home in it. The only knock I have is it has a 9 gallon tank so I usually have to fill up during the week. Other than that great little car with a great reliability record worldwide.

You should be able to find one of these fairly easy.

If you know someone that works for a company with a fleet of company cars, ask them to check the for-sale inventory. Any driver with a company car can check. They usually sell them at 100k miles and you can may be able to find a 21 Camry in that price range.

The cars are typically well-maintained.

Make them walk and let them learn how to get the things they need/want.

As someone who has had, myself, probably 8 or 9 different company/fleet cars over the years- i drove them like rentals, completely abused them and wouldnt want my family member to purchase one… Yes, i am trashy .

New base model Kia Forte. 10 year/100k warranty and they're pretty reliable. Perfect starter car for a kid and it's less than $20k. They still make them in manuals too if you want to teach that to them.

The best thing that’s ever happened to car dealerships is a lease. They get back a 1,2,3 or 4 year old car, low mileage, great shape, well maintained. They certify it, sell it, profit! I know, my friends and relatives own 11 dealerships in the BTR area.
When looking, you have to be ready to buy, a good deal won’t last long.
Another problem, the folks walking across the border, think they still walking? They are in the same market looking for the same car you are. Best of luck.
Subaru does make a very dependable car, just saying.
