I've never been in a bar brawl, but from the videos I've watched of them people just arbitrarily start punching whoever is close to them. Is that accurate?

In fairness it was the most blatantly obvious cheap shot in the fight and front and center for the camera to pick up. It was also when the fight was pretty much over at the time, great chance it never escalates if he doesn't pull that move
