Likely the guy was a way to get back at daddy for him trying to put his foot down after a lifetime of spoiling her. Daddy breaks down and gives her what she wants and she breaks it off with the dude since she is probably tired of him anyway. He doesn't take it well. Don't spoil your daughters.

No such thing. The racehorses just eat up the fortune, and after a bit of digging, yes the family fortune indeed came from chickens and then cold hauling. Interestingly, her mother apparently died a few years back after "falling down stone stairs".
