I have a Pacemaker and they tell me that a MRI will never be in my future. And to never under any circumstances go anywhere near one!

This is the reverse side of my St. Jude Medical Device ID card…

Darwinism isn’t the same as being a dumbass. Chain guy had kids and grandkids. He’ll stay in the gene pool

why does a 60 year old man have a 20 pound chain around his neck?
It’s a relic of slavery imposed by the white man. You’ll never understand. Racist.

My friends and I were talking about it as well but what I heard was that the tech waved him in to help his wife get up from her MRI.
The machine is not always on but was clearly on in this situation, and if true, that hospital is gonna get very sued.

In a situation like this, I assume the insurance company’s attorneys look very hard into the finances of the tech, right?

I’m just curious if it was a gradual pull towards the machine or it happened at lightning speed.

don’t understand everytime I’ve had a mri I simply remove everything metal and then the tech checks anyway
How could anyone think wearing a chain was ok???
I've had 4 MRI's in the past year, I forgot to take my belt off for one of them and it started pulling me really hard. Hit the panic button thing they give you and they came and took my belt off. Scared the crap out of me when my hips started lifting up

It’s not always acquiring images, but it is always magnetic once it’s set up. If you hit the emergency discharge button, it discharges, a bunch of helium out of some smoke stack above the roof and it cost like tens of thousands of dollars to redo the machine.

They didn’t ask you to change into a gown?

Now you have.

I have to admit having an MRI is somewhat terrifying to me. This mechanical mitral valve in my heart is metal.
I made sure to make it known I have a couple screws in both my right knee and right ankle holding things together and I've never had a problem.

I've had 4 MRI's and 3 CT scans in the past year and I've had to change into a gown 1 time. Imaging centers are a little more relaxed apparently.

You’re wrong. The magnet is always “on”. It can not be turned off.

There are MRI-friendly pacemakers. Next time you're up for a battery change, ask for one. Your insurance will pay if you have a legit need for a MRI for something else.

I wouldn't worry so much. I've had two MRIs, one of them was upper body. I have a permanent metal retainer in my mouth that didn't concern them at all. For my last MRI I did have a lady in the waiting room that had some internal metal (may have been a heart valve), and the staff did 45 minutes of checking and cross checking before they declined to do it and sent her back to her doctor to look for alternatives.

Can’t hide a 20 lb chain. Cant believe a tech let him in the room.

I've never had to.. but I know what to wear to an MRI. I worked on MRI rooms back in my medical center days. The magnet is always on, so I would have to empty all pockets before going in, and then you walk through a metal detector and if it's not green, you don't go in.
The magnet can be deactivated, but it requires quenching the liquid helium used for cooling... which would kill anyone if they happened to be working on the roof in the immediate vicinity of the quench tube. It also freezes the roof and ruins its integrity, so there's a sacrificial layer down that has to be replaced if that ever happens.

I'll tell you exactly how that conversation went having been around some low IQ techs and patients.
You have any metal in you.
Nah. ( Patient not associating his 20 pounds of gold as metal)
Ok go in.
Posted on 7/22/25 at 7:55 am to MrSpock
I guess that's the most likely scenario, but the last MRI I got they were dead fricking serious and I had to sign a waiver about metal on or in my person. (and put on a gown)
My wedding ring is gold and they said to take it off just in case.
If you're right, the lawsuit will be large.
