When I lived on Block Island 15 years ago it was common practice. It’s a small island of only a couple hundred residents and it’s a long ferry ride to the mainland.
In the traditional sense of picking someone up with their thumb up on the side of the road not so much outside of what I mentioned. But I have given and taken rides from strangers in many situations over the years.

The only way I'm doing that now is if I see someone broken down on the side of the road and obviously needing help.

I remember when I was in high school we were warned not to pull over to help people who looked like they had a flat or were broken down because that was a scheme going around where some students had gotten car jacked.

I was driving my truck and saw a guy with a gas can.
I pulled over and asked him what was up.
"ran out of gas going to walk to the store and get some"
I'm like, man I guess I got here just in time I will walk with you. Dude looks at me like I'm crazy & I'm like what?
"you better lock your truck we in the hood man"

Done it a few times in Jackson Hole. People hike the trails and get rides back down to their vehicles all the time.

I hitchhiked myself a few times doing that.

When I was young my dad would pick up hitch hikers all the time. Loved doing it. Liked to hear their stories. Usually did it when he was alone, but once with my brothers and me in the car. Picked up a couple of crusty looking guys that stunk to high heaven. My whole left side where I was next to them stunk afterwards.

Another time he picked up five black guys late at night on airline on his way back from Opelousas. Most would call him crazy, but they were super grateful because it was pitch black outside and spooky as hell.

Dad had a guardian angel that my mother always said had to retire once he passed.

Never a real hitchhiker, but I picked up 3 college dudes attempting to walk home from Bogie's at 2AM one night.

I've been picked up by random people twice while I was walking home from a bar as well.

Thread reminded me of this story from last baseball season

Hitchhiker's Guide to StarkVegas

Cliffs:

- State fan picks up Belgium hitchhiker off I-55

- State fan was headed to Starkville for baseball series so took hitchhiker with him

- Hitchhiker became famous in Left Field Lounge

I've never picked one up, but I have gotten random rides from strangers twice.

The first was in college, my gf was driving us home after a long night at the bar and she was on my arse about something. We were at a red light and I just got out and started walking. A few mins later a chick pulled up and asked if I needed a ride. She didn't look too bad, but I noticed a car seat in the back. She took me home, I invited her in but she declined. Oh well.

Second time was coming home from LSU/Georgia in 09. Ran out of gas on the interstate just north of Mobile. We started walking down the shoulder, and after about a mile a nice couple picked us up, brought us to the gas station and took us back to our car. I tried to pay him but he wouldn't take it. Nicest Auburn fans I've ever met.

I picked up a hitchhiker on I 10 a little west of Houston and gave him a ride all the way to El Paso.
It was just starting to rain when I saw the guy, he was a clean cut young guy with a huge backpack. He told me that he had just graduated HS and was going to hitchhike around the country for a few months before enlisting in the Navy. I asked him what he was doing for money and he said he had a credit card that he could use if he needed money. He said he a couple of thousands in savings to pay his bills for a few months. A really nice kid, though a little naive.

Same here, I'll give hikers and backpackers a ride. I've done it twice just this year.

Figure I'll return the favor. Started when some guy saved me from walking many miles after missing the last shuttle in Zion.

I do in the mountains when you can tell it's a hiker. Many hikers, including myself, hitchhike from the trail into town to resupply, then back out to the trail. Pretty common up and down the Appalachian Trail. Usually makes for some good stories and a way to meet some great people just out enjoying nature.

When I was in college me and my best friend worked together, I had driven him to work that evening because it was snowing and I had 4x4. On the way home around midnight it is still snowing and the interstate is covered. We come up on a corner and can see tire marks leading into the middle barrier and then back across all three lanes to the guard rail where a busted car is now sitting partially sticking out in the far right lane. As we finish rounding the curve and past the crashed car I see a guy walking down the shoulder towards the nearest exit about a mile away. Without really thinking I tell my friend let's pick him up and take him to where he needs to go. Keep in mind this stretch of interstate isn't in the best part of town. So I pull up next to him and tell him to get in, he says thanks and hops in the passenger seat and my friends gets in the backseat behind him. As soon as he gets in the whole truck smells like alcohol and he starts rambling on how it's not his car but he just put new tires on it and hopes they aren't ruined. I quickly realize my mistake and ask him if he wants us to drive him home. He says no just drop me off at the store at the nearest exit because they have a phone. As we get off the exit and he points me in the direction he wants us to drop him off I see it's a combined fried chicken and liquor store. So drop him off at the entrance and he slurs out a thanks man and we go our separate ways. I turn around and look at my friend and he has a wtf look on his face and I see he has his knife out just in case he tried anything. We both concluded that we were probably accessories to atleast a few crimes that night.

Saw this thread and had to bump.

In college, me and two guys from our dorm would drive around smoking bowls. We were on the outskirts of town and saw this homeless man and started laughing about picking him up and giving him a ride to the next town. Pulled over and asked "hey bro you wanna smoke a bowl" "hell yeah motherfrickers" He hopped in and got so baked he couldn't even talk. I can't imagine if he had ever smoked weed that good

One time me and a couple of buddies of mine were driving from a baptism to Tishomingo, Mississippi and picked up a hitchhiker. Turned out to be a young black guy named Tommy Johnson and carried a guitar with him. He told us that he was on his way to Tishomingo to record a song at WEZY. Then things took a weird turn. Tommy told us he had sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the ability to play the guitar real good. Well, we ended up at the radio station to discover it was run by a blind guy. We joined Tommy in the song, recorded it, and got paid $10 a piece. I feel kind of bad about it now, because I scammed the blind guy. I told him there were six of us in the band, when there were really only four, so we got an extra twenty bucks.

Tommy parted ways with us soon after that. We saw him later at a Ku Klux Klan rally, but that's another story for another time.

I stopped to pick up a hitchhiker earlier today. He asked me if I was worried about possibly picking up a serial killer.

I just said, "No, not at all. I mean... what are the odds of there being two serial killers in the same car at the same time?"

I don't know why, but he said he forgot something and had to go back the other way. He got out before I could even put the car in drive.

Strange fellow.
