Coming back from our camp, got going too fast on a washboard dirt road and hit a tree that kept me from going in the Ouachita River. Time really does slow down. It seemed like I was airborne forever. I didn't feel any fear, but I clearly remember thinking what a stupid way to die. I walked away with a small scratch on my elbow.

Another time at the camp, flipped an atv trying to load it in a truck. I landed on my back with it coming down on top of me. I managed to kick it to one side in probably the most athletic move I've made in my life. That one happened so fast I didn't think about anything until after.

A couple times .. most involved alcohol

But once in Bath England I stepped out from a car parked on the side of a narrow street.. should have leaned out to peek .. it was very narrow street .. cars parked on both curbs.. as an American I was focused on looking the wrong direction.. heard screeching and the car coming stopped touching my leg..

Another time in high school a bunch of us were at a local swimming hole ( a big gravel pit that hit water and filled up.. I figured I could swim across.. was weird… got close to other edge and was struggling bad.. thought oh I can just rest and sink for a moment then go up an swim more.. did that and as I was sinking I gained reality and said wtf … I am sinking to deep .. struggled to get up.. adrenaline kicked in and swam and surface floated to the shore..that one reminds me how easy it it to die because of poor decisions.

Mamma Cass didn’t choked on a ham sandwich. She suffered a heart attack. The partially eaten sandwich was on a nightstand.

I almost slid under a sugar cane truck stopped on a road. I was very sleepy and it was some of the worst fog I’ve ever seen. I turned off onto the shoulder. Honestly I would have died if I hadn’t of woke myself up and notice that truck. Pure luck or blessing depending on how you see it. I usually do pray on the way to work in the mornings.

3 times I feel like I got very lucky.

1. I was a medic in the army and I was eating very fast because we were loading up headed to a maneuver off site and I starting choking. I was in the building alone and had nothing to use to try to dislodge it myself. After about 20 seconds, one of my buddies walks in(fellow medic) and saved my life.

2. I was driving to work very early one morning. It was very dark and a semi with a milk tanker was headed towards me. As the truck approached I saw something large dart across in front of it . Whatever it was the truck swerved into my lane then swerved back the other direction. The tanker then begin to come around in my lane (jackknifing). I swerved to my right, but the ditches were very deep and the tail end of the tanker trailer knocked off my mirror. That was the only damage. The truck and trailer ended up in a cow pasture. I pulled over and prayed and thanked God for being with me. I checked on the other driver to make sure he was ok and then went home and poured a drink at 5:15 am.

Lastly, my wife was scheduled to do a sleep study and was leaving to go to the sleep clinic. Before she left she cooked some chicken and vegetables and I came home starving. Before I ate she kissed me goodbye and walked to her car. She then walked back in and asked if she should bring her pillow, I told her that I would if it were me. As she walked to the bedroom to get her pillow I was going full starving dog on this chicken and began to choke. I began banging on the table as she walked in and performed the Heimlich on me and cleared my airway. That one really scared me because I was supposed to to be home alone, but fate brought her back in to get that pillow.

I now chew ALL my food slowly and deliberately.

Twice.

Internal bleeding after a major surgery and they couldn't figure it out locally. They had to send me back to Houston. It was so bad I kissed my wife goodbye forever. My daughter was 8 months old and very sick and she couldn't come with me. I listened to Christmas carols that Christmas night in Houston for my daughters first Christmas praying to get home to them.

It was so close the nurse who loaded me up called me the next day to see if I made it. He said he had a little girl my daughters age and he was mine and he was sick over it after he shipped me out. I was in such bad shape.

2nd was when I blacked out in my driveway while my 2 kids were walking me after a second surgery. My bowels stopped working completely for several days and I was becoming septic and infections were spreading. Back to Houston at 430 in the morning only for them to tell me there's nothing they can do but give me some meds off label and hope for the best. I again laid their fighting to stay cognizant of my surroundings afraid if I closed my eyes I'd never open them or see my wife and kids again. I refused to sleep or give up.

Every day is a blessing. I spend it all doing everything I can with my family. A blink of an eye can take it all away.

More than one but the most memorable was a fight call at a bar with all units responding to a guy with a shotgun threatening a female in the parking lot.
Arrive on scene and he has the gun in his hand/s and the female is laying in the passenger seat of the vehicle described by the dispatcher.
He is extremely intoxicated and as I get out of my unit he turns the gun my direction and pulls the triggers.
Clicks.
We are literally 10-12ft apart and I was able to wrestle the malfunctioning firearm from him. And get his drunk arse into handcuffs.

God was riding with me that night.

That double barrel failed for a reason and I still to this day wonder what if.

Some guy ran a red light and spun me out, totalled the car, had a thing of water in the car that went everywhere and soaked me. I thought I was soaked in my own blood. I'm actually a big coward but when shite hits the fan or ik i have to bite the bullet, I do. Idk what to make of that. Anyways, I looked down at my body and audibly said out loud "hooooly shite, im alive."

That was a weird experience.

Yes...
Stepped out of front door, chewing gum...

about to do yard work....

Gum got stuck in my windpipe as I was walking down front steps.

Started passing out, felt like.. here we go, I die in my front yard..

Fell down steps, lying on the ground, things started going foggy and then suddenly with my last breathe coughed out the gum

Mowed the grass 10 mins later

All I got

I think we've all avoided it at one time or another whether we knew it or not. Drunk driver on highway, wrong place wrong time, etc....
