It's discussed here. Apparently folks will pay to have a vehicle ferried to the island and keep it there. Instead of paying for the trailer to be barged over they use this method.

? There's a seal on one side and a dust cup on the other. Its an actual sealed system. Its why you don't sling grease all over your boat when you drive down the road at 70 MPH. To think that this is somehow worse on your bearings or going to cause water intrusion or damage than pulling it three hours down the interstate lacks a basic knowledge of how these things are designed and installed.

Did that with a gallon of milk. Could not find it for 2 days till I opened the pantry.
