I don't like being bothered by people, either. I don't like people in general. But, this is something I can respect and am polite to people who show up, generally. They are doing something they truly believe in and it comes from a place of love, whether you agree or not. I'll engage in brief small talk and take whatever booklet they want to give me.

The only time I have ever been rude was when some Jehovah's witnesses came by my house and saw my son's wheelchair on the back porch. They asked about his condition, and I gave a very brief "special needs child" response. The man had the audacity to tell me that he felt sorry for my son because he was a "casualty in the war on sin." Basically, he said that God does not make these things happen (which itself goes completely against my faith) but he allows the devil to make kids sick so that people will see it and stop sinning. I told him to get the frick off my porch.

Just out of curiosity, are the people who don't mind the door-to-door folks saying they wouldn't mind door-to-door Buddhists/Daoists/Muslims/Scientologists, etc? Do you only humor the Christians? :seriouslynoflame:

Me neither. I don't care about your soul, and I don't like to disturb people.

2 super hot Jehov Witnesses used to talk to me out in the yard occasionally. Reminded me of cult members but they were interesting to talk to.

Calling BS on this as Mormon Missionaries ALWAYS are paired up two by two. They have to stay with each other.

Don't you people ever "Book of Mormon"?

Really?!? Jehovah's Witnesses are the most kindhearted and sincere people you will meet. They aren't there to make your life miserable, they are there to help make your life better. Look around you folks, this world is a cesspool, and it isn't because God made it that way, I'm smart enough to know that.Fact is, most of you probably only know what a bible is from the cover, or because of what someone told you is in it. At least JW's will use the Bible when they talk to you and not just tell you what to believe. Next time they knock on your door, try asking a question that really puzzles you, like why is there so much suffering in the world? The answer you get may surprise you. And for the poster with the special needs child, I empathize with you, as my daughter was born with some joint conditions and no hip sockets ( they have made her some tho through surgeries), however, you might have misunderstood what was said, or it's possible that the person didn't explain things just right. At the end of the day, the Witnesses have what I would consider the truth of the Bible. It makes perfect sense. Try asking next time and you might get answers to questions that you never thoght you'd find.

The height of arrogance is trying to convert other people. Shows you have no respect for them and you think you are better than them. Keep it to yourself.

If they happen upon a person in the right situation who is maybe going through some things and needs some support and is open to it I would think that it would be very effective.

I'm much more puzzled by the Christians who "do nothing to spread their message."

If you truly believe that everyone that doesn't believe that Jesus is their only saviour is spending eternity in Hell, and you waste time watching football, working in the yard, etc, your actions tell me that you don't care.

Let me just say this is not a topic you want to discuss with me

As for this:

quote:

you might have misunderstood what was said

I'm not an idiot. That guy and people of his ilk are. He called my son "collateral damage." My God does not punish sin by making babies sick. And it's beyond fricked up to even suggest that. If it helps you sleep at night to think that, by all means, have at it. But, that is not the truth and normal people don't believe that. I don't need to ask questions about a hateful and vengeful god who would do such a thing.

ETA: The arrogance of "perhaps you didn't understand" is exactly why people don't open their doors. They understand. They just don't believe that brand of "truth."

Fair enough. Although fwiw I don't think Jesus himself was interested in preaching to anyone except fellow Jews.

a decade or so ago, I used to squirrel hunt every saturday morning...at some point, a jehovah's witness lady patterned me and every saturday as I walked out to the back yard and started cleaning squirrels, she would show up and talk non-stop until I finished...

finally, one day late in the season, she caught me in a bad mood and after she had talked for a while I explained to here in a firm (but polite) way that I was solid in my current beliefs and had no intention of changing religions....

she suddenly got kind of spooked and hurried away. a few minutes later, I realized that when I was talking to her, I was dressed in camoflauge, covered with blood up to my elbows and pointing a large knife at her as I was explaining my position to her...

No, and those types normally lose interest when my dog answers the door. Not sure if it's the growling and snarling or the show of teeth or both. Bottom line she is letting them know that she is about to rip their assholes out if they don't leave. Saves me the trouble.

I respect anyone's right to believe as they wish, but I also expect them to reciprocate in respecting my beliefs by not trying to shove theirs down my throat.

Oh, the guard dog seems to be a practicing Satanist. I'm Episcopalian myself.

Agree.

I can't fault someone from trying to talk about their faith to others. Like someone else said, it usually comes from a place of love. When people come to my door they are usually Jehovah's Witness or Mormons. I just tell them I already belong to a church that I really like, take any pamphlets they are handing out to not be rude and wish them a good day. When I used to buy the individual bottles of water I would offer them bottled water if it was during the warmer months.

Well yes many of them are kind and many are sincere, but they are sincerely wrong in their doctrine. It is demonstratively ginned up.

quote:

At least JW's will use the Bible when they talk to you and not just tell you what to believe

This is not accurate. They use their translation that was shown to be a scam in court. Their translation committee consisted of 5 people, none of which had knowledge of Greek nor Hebrew. None of the committee had more than a high school education/diploma and the only committee member whom attempted collegiate level Greek failed and dropped out in his sophomore year of college. Now if they use a legitimate translation of the Bible, they will have to acknowledge copious amounts of scripture that completely contradicts their doctrine so no, your claim is inaccurate at best.

quote:

This is a buzz word used incessantly by JW's. If someone has to pound the word "truth" constantly, red flags should go up. The REAL truth needs not be sold continuously as it will sell itself.

I like to pretend it's halftime of my life and that I am the head coach and the proselytizers are Erin Andrews asking 1 question about my life up to now and then a second question about my life from here forward. Just like a football game doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, my life doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Sometimes I do the Jim mora and Allen iverson, "Eternal life! We're talking about Eternal life" I repeat that response for every question no matter the question like marshan lynch..

Sometimes I do the bill bellicheck, "didn't get the job done accepting gods will, got to do better that's all there is to it." I repeat that response for every question like marshan lynch
