If ICE needs to see the squirrels, birds and rodents eating up my garden, then let them watch.

Wait till you find out pretty much everyone is wittingly or unwittingly part of the modern surveillance state. Anyone with a family member with an internet-capable device, anyone whose family member has taken a DNA ancestry test, anyone who drives on public roads.

It's here and not going anywhere. Just have to hope automated AI doesn't completely take over law enforcement.

That isn't a good strategy.

People could just use private cameras on their own network.

It appears to be default opt-in, and you must take action to opt-out.

You know this is just for the community feed where law enforcement agencies request camera info related to investigations in the area? They aren't able to see anything without a warrant unless you choose to share it with them. The opt-out feature is to stop these requests from showing up in your community feed.

That is only true as long as you think the government is not corrupt.

Well, I can't get the meth heads and thugs to help me fight the government, but I can get the government to maybe prosecute the meth heads and thugs that might be found on my ring footage doing shenanigans.

I do not. I have big dogs and am safe. I got off of neighborhood fb pages bc of the people who had nothing to do but report what they see via ring. They clearly have nothing to do. And it’s frustrating we have no privacy anymore.

Or employees just access the videos and share it like they have been caught doing before.

I see some of the dumbest things on ring, some Karen will post "there's a coyote walking down such and such street, anybody know what's going on?"

ETA: I never post on there but was tempted to post "wait a minute, let me go ask the coyote"

Got rid of ours because I am not willing to aid the state in violating the rights of my fellow citizens. The police have unlimited power in this country they do not me to help them in any manner.

Plenty of doorbell and garage cameras have captured people in the commission of actual crimes, not just against the owner but against their neighbors as well.

I have to think that this happens way more often than illegal surveillance. Is this even a thing if you’re being recorded outside in public by someone’s doorbell camera?

I would like to know you r logic here. I'd think the crime ridden city would make it more of a reason to have one.

Actually this is pretty topical for me at the moment. I have Nest Cam's, which were pretty great until Google bought them.

Are any of you familiar with how great the video scrubbing on Nest's app was? I'm looking for something similar - with Cloud recording, not a DVR.

Who has the slickest resolution? Does Ring work well? Arlo?

I’ve always thought in the back of my mind that certain stakeholders (politicians, judges, etc) are becoming more lenient about crime (unless you’re a white man) to help push the acceptance of a surveillance state. To your point, if petty and violent crime was actually punished appropriately, then it would appease the citizenry and subsequently further distrust of local, state and federal authorities poking into your life. Keep crime up, the citizenry will logically look to the authorities to support them, since vigilantism is considered a sin (unfortunately)

We are so far beyond this already. These types of surveillance adaptions are already part of technology most people use daily and are readily available with or without a warrant

True, if you are using someone else's network they almost always have a way to access the data.

Installing these devices helps build out Amazon's own private network.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Sidewalk

They will just keep slow-rolling out 'new features'.

For example, simple gunshot detection devices now want to listen to voices.

I use mine to identify the person who broke into cars in the neighborhood. So far, every time it’s been a skinny kid wearing a hoodie with dark hands. Conviction rate 0.
