consumer reports

Consumer Reports is not a very accurate gauge of quality. It is what their very opinionated writers think are cool, not what is quality by any objective measure.

If you want an objective measure of quality read JD Power's various vehicle quality surveys. They actually contact thousand's of new vehicle owners at various intervals during the first couple of years of ownership to actually ask the owners, not industry insiders.

Having said that, if you compare the fake consumer reports and the actual quality reported by owners you will find that there are a few top scorers like Lexus and Toyota but everyone knows that. But there are a lot of surprises there. Such as Subaru that grew so fact and their quality dropped to a level that the dealers cannot staff with qualified technicians to keep up the the repair demands.

Facts not opinions count.

Good luck

Things have come full circle, BMW is now ripping off Kia's design

The elements you see that are similar have all been in BMW's design language since at least the Chris Bangle era, many of them from far before.

The Stinger was designed in part by a designer poached from BMW's M division.

I'm the service manager at a Kia store. Their reliability is pretty top notch. What really gets me is that they definitely stand behind their vehicles. They issued a recall on certain models and if those cars fail a test, the engine is replaced and comes with a lifetime warranty. We've been replacing engines in vehicles with over 200k miles on them completely free to the customer. They definitely aren't what they used to be.

The Telluride is awesome. I test drove one. Korean cars are on Lexus level now in terms of fit, finish, and quality of materials. Reliability is also great.

The only thing to be wary of is depreciation. Resale value is really weak with Kia and Hyundai. If you are going to keep it a long time, no problem but if you are going to sell in 4 or 5 years expect a hit.

People out there are still prejudiced against Korean cars. They are just now accepting that Korean pianos and guitars are high quality. Maybe in another 15 years the stigma will be gone from the cars too.

They've come a long way from the Rodney King days.

My brother in law did it with their telluride. Even replaced the badge on the steering wheel.

Quality is more important that simply having reliability. Who wants to drive a gaddamn Camry just because it’s reliable?

Resale values tell you what people THINK about reliability. They lag real data significantly.

That's a different statement than you're original one.

The first part of your statement made sense, the second part weht off the rails a little bit, but I agree that reliability and quality aren't necessarily one and the same.

A poor driving car is always crappy, even if it starts and goes every time. Just my opinion, but I’d rather drive something with inspiring handling characteristics that I may have to put in the shop from time to time. Show me a car that parts don’t wear on and it’s likely one I don’t want to drive.

Just admit it. You like tinkering with shite. It's ok, you're among friends here. Youd get bored if you had a car that didnt break down on occasion.

Yeah that's all fair.

I think you're stepping into a 3rd realm altogether though.

Reliability =/= quality =/= driving experience

Everyone values those and other characteristics differently.

Your opinion is the exact polar opposite of most every petrol head ever. JD Powers is a well known bought and paid for shill while Consumer Union is almost the opposite. CU's reliability data is based on reliability surveys that are quite detailed. They offer the most detailed info on reliability by year, make and model than any other non-industry source.

That said their editorialized reviews are a different matter and fall more to the average car buyer than the enthusiast which is a good thing for many and they do have their bias. Being an enthusiast I put more weight on MT, C&D and R&T with a dose of Car and What Car when there is a direct UK and US variant. Each of these has bias as well and I have watched them shift fore and back over the last 35 years.

TLDR: JD Powers reliability data is far more suspect than CR's reliability data.

Rented a 4WD Sportage in March. Drove it all over Santa Barbara, and took it out in the Cali mountains too. Was on some curvy roads, with inclines, and drove on roads like this for a couple of days too.

My pic is at the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Took in the 2019 California Super Bloom there.

It was a Love Purple, Live Gold bloom!
.
I was very impressed with the way the Sportage drove, but it was way smaller than I'd want. Those Telluride's look about the same size as an Explorer or a Cherokee.

I had a Kia Soul as a rental on a vacation in Cali last summer and was surprised at how much I liked it.

It did not feel like the ones that first came to the US in the 90s at all.

See below. South Korea is dedicated to besting the Japanese auto industry for the obvious financial benefits, but also as a source of nation pride. The last 5-6 years they have been making great cars for the price. The “If it says Kia I just recon it’s junk” crowd has no clue.
