I’ve always considered Honda and Toyota to be on the same playing field in terms of quality and reliability, though.

It's understandable. Perception is reality in terms of resale value too.

Check out the Primal Outdoors channel on YouTube. A kia dealer in Oregon gave him a Telluride to use for a while as an overlanding rig. He had it setup by Wanderlust Overland.

He pulls a small trailer all over the Oregon Mountains/Desert with it. I told my wife I wanted her to look at one next time we are shopping for her a vehicle.

Let say if I buy a 2019 Telluride for $35K.

What is its estimated value after 5yrs and 60K miles?

I just bought an XC60 for the wife. I wish we had looked at this now

I've got a Toyota LC that is rigged up for over landing. A guy in my group rigged up a Porsche Cayenne

I own 2 KIAs. Only one minor problem with each so far (have had one for 5 years, the other for 2.5), and both were taken care of promptly, under warranty, by local dealer.

Bottom line: my KIA experience has been favorable.

I see this question a lot.

Here's your math: let's say you have to choose between a KIA and something else that costs $10,000 more up front.
The question isn't what the value of the KIA will be after 60K miles.

The question is will the difference be greater than $10,000 from the other vehicle you are considering? At a price point of $35,000 it is highly unlikely.

My wife's KIA Sorento has 85,000 miles on it, and is worth a little more than half of what I paid it 5 years ago. I did not pay sticker and saved well over $10,000 on a comparable Honda or Toyota (hell, the Honda dealer wanted me to pay the same amount for a damn CRV, which is way less vehicle). I am way ahead financially, since I have had only one minor issue that was covered by the warranty.

Yes, you can spend more for the Toyota/Honda/BMW name, but what are you getting for your extra money? Better warranty? No. Better quality? Not really.

Yea, I’m sure the quality is the same with the XC.

Kia Telluride really goes to show you how powerful a good marketing campaign can be.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet or not but Kia is essentially Hyundai. They are owned by the same company and use the same platforms for their cars and SUV. The Genesis G70 is the same platform as the Kia Stinger. The Telluride will also share the same platform with the new Genesis SUV that is coming out. Same with Optima/Sonata.

There was a massive recall on the Theta 2.4 engines that power most of the sedans. There was an issue where a bearing would wear out and the engine would seize. My 2012 Sonata had this issue before there was even recall. We were well taken care of by the dealer for this fix and while we were without our car for a month they provided a loaner and put a brand new engine in the car when we got it back and extended the engine warranty as well. So overall I am very satisfied and when it was time to get a new car we stayed with the brand purchased a Genesis and love it.

No. Bought the wife a new 2016 Sportage (she wanted the pos and I couldn’t get her in a Nissan) and the engine locked up at 70,000 miles. Bought as a demo (3500 miles) and was told all warranties were still tact. Engine locks up at 70,000 miles and we were told “You didn’t by brand new so power train warranty is null and void. After 3 months of back and forth with them, we spent 7,000 on a new engine and sold the pos. frick Kia.

So you're mad that they enforced a policy that is very clear?

Resale values tell you what people THINK about reliability. They lag real data significantly.

You don’t believe in markets?

ETA: what is reliability? Why would someone care about it? What they are concerned with is cost to own, and resale value is the most predictable variable in that equation.

My wife's last 2 vehicles were Kia's. Have not encountered a single mechanical issue with either. The first one met it's demise only after hitting it's third deer... That's the only thing that could kill it. The current one is yet to have a single issue (65,000 miles). I've been completely happy with them.

Mine was a rental, but I really like the way it drove, on, and off, road. I was supposed to have a basic sedan, but arrived really late when they didn't have many cars there. I chose it over a Lincoln MKZ Sedan because I knew we were going to the mountains, and the beach.

The last rental I had before that was a Mercedes CLA Hybred 4-door. It looked tiny from outside. I expected my parents would complain about how little room the back seat had. but I was told it was was pretty roomy. It was a fun drive around Virginia Beach. Got it because they ran out of basic sedans too. I seem to get lucky with upgrades on rentals.
