Has it started to become normal to pass off the CC Service Fee to the Customer?

Everywhere in SWLA, you use a CC, they want to charge you a service fee surcharge. I thought this crap violated their agreement with the CC companies? Who the hell walks around with a wad of cash or a check book anymore?

This is some small business privilege crap right here and I’m a huge proponent of supporting small/local businesses.

I bought some equipment this morning that ended up being around $1K and they wanted me to pay a service fee. That’s aggravating.

You'd be all for it if you owned a small business and saw how much that shite adds up when you have to eat it thousands of times.

My ford dealership does that. They wanted a check. I laughed my arse off and told them back in the 90s and 2000s, the last thing a business wanted was a check and risk it bouncing. I told them this is the cost of doing business, and you know you are getting the money, plus people opt to spend the money now and pay over time to the CC company. They would put off services for that reason. They blamed the owner.

It is a very short sighted business mindset.

It's against their agreement with the CC companies, Visa and MasterCard allow anyone to report a business that charges extra for using either card. Repeated charging of fees will get their license revoked from both companies.

You can always refuse to pay the service charge too, while pointing out it's a violation of the card company policy. If more people pushed back, this would not happen. But you chose to comply.

I know you feel like you got one over on them, but you paid that fee somewhere in there and you know it.

3-5% of the sale total is what most CC companies charge. That's 10% of a business's profit if they're making 30% on goods sold.

Don't buy their products if you feel strongly about it. Private businesses should be able to charge and do what they want. The consumer should be able to buy or not buy as they choose. Free enterprise Baw.

Most savvy businesses just offer a “cash discount”, then it is up to the consumer to decide.

Pretty common: Racetrac, SPEC’s, just off the top of my head.

This arrangement complies with the CC rules.

I didn't pay NEAR 3%, much less 5% unless someone swiped an AMEX, which was rare. Our card fee average was less than 1%, this included debit transactions, for most months. We paid a higher percentage to offer 0% financing, it was worth the fee because people get stupid when they get a few grand on a 0% loan. I have no doubt people are paying higher fees for CC swipes, they just didn't shop around for better rates.

I understand but it just doesn’t sit right with me. I understand businesses have to eat the cost but it just seems greedy if you’re making 30% off goods sold.

I choose to go there to support small business. I could have went to Home Depot and bought the same thing for cheaper without a service fee.

All I’m saying...it seems like a bunch of BS and be thankful for their customers. Not rake them over with fees.

You anti-cash people always crack me up.

Cash is and will always be king. You dont realize how much money you can save by paying for things with cash.

30% margin after COGS is decent, at best.

Do you know what Cost of Goods Sold covers? exactly what it says. The direct/indirect costs of that transaction.

Doesn't cover rent, utilities, administrative costs, debt service, any licenses/permits, etc etc etc.

If our jobs have a 30% margin we are doing Ok but nothing more.

We are not allowed to charge anything.

We can offer a cash discount although we don't.

We spend about 30k per year on CC fees at 2.7%. shite adds up quick.

Not when they sign a contract with a third party vendor and service provider saying they won't do that. That's the issue here. Sell what you want. Charge whatever price you want. Accept whatever payment methods you want. But one of those payment methods has conditions hardwired into their customer agreements and you need to either abide by that or decline to use those payment methods.
